Q & A / Re: Mazuri or Oxbow?

Not that I know much, and anyone please feel free to correct me if I am wrong here, but I believe that if you are switching the food that you are feeding your chin that you should add a little but of the new food in with his old food for about a week or two.  Then mix them half and half for two more weeks, then switch him or her over completely, because chins have very VERY sensitive tummies   :-[

My chin Chloe scared the poopoo out of me when I first got her. I had Berry for a couple of months, and he never made any noises, well around 2am, I hear this loud crying noise (Chloe doing the warning call) and it was so loud I could hear it from the bedroom. I jumped up and thought the worst had happened to my new baby, and raced to her cage, and she was sitting on her top shelf just making that noise. She was just fine, I think she was a little scared being in a new cage in a new house... ya know the usual. Poor thing, she makes it every once in a while now... just for attention. Yep, I still run to her cage to find out if she's okay. She's definately got me trained. LOL!

Every morning at 9am, just when I am falling asleep from work Harvey starts doing his call too.  Every time if I am really close to falling asleep it scares the crap out of me and then I am wide awake for about half an hour I always try to get home and fall fast asleep before 9am hits, because he never fails to start at 9am, scares me half to death.

My name is Andrea and my Chin Harvey I believe is only six months old.  He is a standard and the reason I do not know his age is my mom found him at a pet store and we are always rescuing animals from pet shops because we feel bad for them :)

Cages / Re: cages

I've seen cages that people make using an old cabinet with doors on it.  I have been looking for a cabinet at thrift stores that I could empty out and add shelves into it...what kind of wire would I use on the doors...chicken wire?  And I know the best kind of wood for them in untreated pine, but does it matter if the cabinet is made of untreated pine or would it be ok if the shelves and everything in the cage was chinchilla safe?

Thanks everyone for your advice.  He doesn't really like raisins often but he loves the dehydrated bananas that come in his food, so I use those for treats now.  I think he is starting to trust me a little, yesterday after I finally got him back in his cage he got on his stoop and let me pet him and today he let me hold him with no fuss.  I just won't be letting him out again until he is comfortable enough around me for play time to be a LOT easier  :::grins::

So as you know I just for Harvey but play time is a pain in my butt.  When you all got your first chinchillas how did you get them back into their cages when play time was over.  I put him in the bathroom and he just runs from me.  I tried putting his bath in there but when I go to pick it up and he is in there he just hops right out.  Then he jumps under a shelf in the bathroom and does that little scared yelp they do.  I don't know what to do, because I love letting him run around, but getting him back into his cage I definetly do not love.  And after todays escapades if he was starting to trust me he definetly does not anymore.   ::shrug::

From everything i've read Chinchillas pick a spot in their cage to pee, but they can't control where they pee.  And everyone who I have asked said to just put toilet paper, papertowel cardboard rolls in the cage.  I also use an empty box of raisins.

Hi, my name is Andrea my mother just bought me a chinchilla for my birthday/graduation from college present.  I have wanted one for so long, I named him Harvey.  I have only had him for three days but he is becoming braver each day with his cage and me.  Any suggestions for what to do, since I only have one chinchilla and I know they are best with others chins is there anything I can do to make up for the lack of a play friend?  Thanks very much and I can't wait to check out the board.
