Health / Labored Breathing
« on: June 28, 2010, 07:56:51 AM »
Hi guys its been awhile but I knew to turn to you guys you could give me the best answer before I consult a vet.  One of my female standards gave birth a black velvet female just 1 about 4 months ago.  The standard was getting older and I wanted to take her out of breeding.  When I close off her pop hole she must of had gotten pregnant before i did this. I closed her pophole off and moved the male completely to a different run.  After she gave birth you could tell was the last straw.  she was raising her baby just fine.  long story short the standard developed an illness that we just couldnt shake and she passed away about a week ago.  I didnt want the baby to be by herself after just losing her momma.  I introduced her to another female who was younger and she was very affectionate. I took several days and she spent a day in the older females cage and all was gravy they were getting along great!....lastnight i went downstairs and I was so upset something happened and the older female turned on the baby and you could tell the baby was really stressed and had bite marks on her skin behind her ears. I took her out and examined her, she doesnt seem to have any other injuries but i could tell she had been peeing herself but i figured it was from stress because she was staying in the corner of the cage scared out of her little mind.  This is what worries me her breathing was very labored lastnight, I also took this as an effect of being stressed so i put her in her own cage and brought her upstairs to be monitored.  this morning her breathing is still labored.  I listened to her lungs and it sounded like there might be a little fluid in there.  I sucked a tiny bit of fluid out through her nose but it didnt seem to be a large amount or anything.  she has lightened up, she is eatting im not sure is she is so much drinking but she is eatting food. SHe keeps wiping her nose and thats what make me think that there is something up with her nasal passage.  I checked her ribs, limbs,  her throat doesnt seem to be swollen at all and she seem to be eatting fine I just cant seem to get her breathing right its been like 8 hours.  she does seem to be sluggish do you guys think maybe there is internal damage.  I have never had chins fight and one come out this severe, and the vets around here are horrible, I am going to consult a vet but I wanted to see what you guys think and if you have ever had this happen

I have heard of and seen side by side cage mating but my cages are not side by side for this reason, and macy is not on top or under and cages thats what is such a mystery to me, I cant wait to see what male caused this tho so that I know to keep a better eye on him...lol

Ok here is one situation I have yet to have to deal with until now.  I decided a while ago to retire one of my standard females named Macy because she has been good to me and blessed me with several litters and I wanted her to have a break from breeding, so I put her in a cage with one of my young female beiges named "Peanut Butter" that she had fostered and her and the beige are very happy together.  Well I noticed Macy putting on the pounds and suprisingly enough she got pregnant some how and I felt the babies rolling around in her belly..lol and she still hasn't had her litter so she couldn't have gotten pregnant right before I took her away from her male. I am stumped everyone.  I talked to one of my friends who has been a breeder to many many years and she said that she had this happen before and that somehow one of her males had gotten to one of her females through seperate cages somehow.  So I went into the chin room and thought about who was that close to her and honestly there is no one remotely even close their cage the closest would be about 2 feet away.  So I am extremely confused.  I even double checked to make sure that beige was a female and she deffinitly is.  And whats worse is I have no idea who the father is it could be anyone!  Has anyone ever had this experience before, I have heard of this happening from having cages to close together but their cage is decently far from anyone....I guess we will see who the daddy is when the babies come...lol... ::shrug::

Yes I have had this happen more times than I can count..lol...and so has my fiancee..lol....He came home the one night and one of chins learned how to unlatch their cage and I was at work in the evening so he spent the majority of his time after work catching the 3 chins that got loose hahah. :D

Cages / Re: getting a new cage
« on: February 07, 2008, 01:04:48 AM »
i have to agree with chillin chinchillas I have several of those tall and deep cages they are great without all the mess.  I put ledges in it and it seems to be better than those plastic snap in shelves not to mention the ledges when they poop goes straight down to the bottom instead of sitting on top.

General Chat / Does anyone else have this problem?
« on: February 03, 2008, 10:02:32 PM »
Im a little frustrated and I am wondering if anyone else has this problem with their chins.  My chins love having wheels in their cages and over the past few months I have been buying more and more wheels so that I dont have to keep rotating, but here is the problem, My chins run so fast on their wheels it seems to violently shake their cages and then their water bottles start leaking because of all the motion.  I fill their water bottles in the evening and after a crazy night of wheel running a lot of the water has soaked the bedding then I have to take out the wet bedding and replace it, therefore I am going through bedding like crazy lately.  I want my chins to have fun on their wheels but the water bottle issue is driving me nuts.  When I take the water bottles off for a little running time then they get mad because they want a drink in between runs.  Any suggestions or am I stuck with this issue? :-[

Sounds like you have a chinny that loves you.  The flying saucer that you are getting for her isnt made out of plastic is it tho?
