General Chat / Tragic deaths...but one new life...
« on: April 04, 2010, 07:12:58 AM »
Hey it's life, poo happens or so they say...But the two chins in our profile pic, Jake and Elwood, are gone. Elwood passed of old age, we found him stiff in his little hut. LOL kinda funny but sad and tragic at the same time. Jake, well, he accidently dislocated his spine-I'll never exercise in the room when he's out again-and he couldn't move his back two legs. After seeing him like that for a week, I made the call to put him out of his misery, and that was that.

Now we got a healthy cuddly great little baby named Tommy. He's doing great and don't worry I don't lift weights when he's out of the cage. Tommy also knew Elwood for a little while before he passed. He gets along great with our bunnyMarshall, who seems to be very smart and stays out of people's way. Chinchillas, for some reason, well their curiousity is never satisfied.

I know I'll prob get crucified for parylizing my own pet but hey we know people who have killed baby chins by stepping on them closing doors on them etc, all by accident...call me careless reckless I don't give a poo but I had to share this with all of you, so new chin owners know to be careful. Chins are quick little animals and could end up under your feet, or something else, in a second...

Elwood update! He's eating almost everything, still not too many pellets, but a few. I just found out that he loves the baby sweet potatoes our vet suggested! He doesn't like the critcal care. I've been giving him meds, including the gas x. He is running around and playing with Jake too. Only problem is still little poopies; he's going ...a lot though, I change his cage daily. I've been syringe feeding him water too. I'll keep an eye on him.

JoAnn, I will try the cranberry water mixture and see how it goes!

JoAnn, This is Elwood's Mom--I did take him to our exotic vet. No impaction she could feel, his poops are getting a bit bigger. She gave him fluids and B vitamin injection. Sher was unsure if he might've injured his leg, possibly a pulled tendon since he seemed to pull that leg in a little bit. But he does not favor it when he jumps or runs around. He is running a round a bit, but gets tired quickly. We got some oral pain meds, metacam we are giving him in case he won't eat because of pain. We are continuing with critical care forced feedings, which Elwood fights me on! He is still quite active and resisting force feedings, pushing me away and trying to escape the towel. He even bites too! We will continue our therapy and hope for the best. IF things worsen, back to the vet we go!
thanks,

Yea, Elwood was favoring one of his hind legs, it looked like. We don't know if it's an impaction that's buggin him or an injured hind leg. He's been eating hay but not pellets. We are syringe feeding him the oxbow critical care stuff so he gets all his vitamins, he's movin' around. Jake keeps wanting to play with him and he's just like, yea leave me alone. So we'll see how he turns out.

Q & A / Sick Chin? Confused.
« on: November 03, 2009, 04:06:14 PM »
I did a quick search and this helped me out but I want some more expert advice from the community here. We got 2 chinnies, one is a less than a year old(Jake)and the other(Elwood), well we don't know how old he is. We're the 3rd owners, and he's lived in abusive homes before(the other chin he was with died of starvation and who knows what El has put up with. Most of the time I have to catch them to put them in their cage, my gf is much more patient then I am and will coax them with raisins. The lil guy Jake doesn't seem to mind being handled too much, I've hand fed him rainins in my arms before. El the older one simply hates being handled or pet at all, and will instantly clean himself and bite you if you touch him. He really seems to resent humans.

The other night I caught El and put him away, and the next day my gf noticed he wouldn't come out, or eat, or take treats, and he's stopped pooping, except for these little dot sized poops. He will eat half a raisin, and a little hay, but mostly stays in one corner and it almost looks like he's about to throw up, he has this weird breathing pattern. Not sure if maybe I hurt him? Or he is just old? Maybe a lot older than we thought? Any input is appreciated, I hope I didn't hurt him when I caught him...

oh boy sorry to hear that, well we just gave the last guy, Pip, meds and tried to not stress him out. Jo Ann had some great advice on impactions. Pip didn't really improve and after a while just became flat and seemed like he didn't have a will to live. once we saw that we knew it was his time. her other chin, Chili, was before my time so i'm not sure what she did but i think he chewed a live electrical cord? (lamp cord i think it was) while under someone else's care, and it messed him up pretty good, that when his infections began.

from my understanding any and all means necessary must be taken to avoid infections of any kind for a chin to live a long healthy and happy life

ok cool, yea this is a cage for ferrets...you know i'm surprised my gf didn't pick up on the plastic thing, she's the chin expert...i'm new to the chin world and now i'm concerned. it's been about 2 weeks and i don't see any nibble marks on the shelves yet...but now i want to go look.

i put pine corners around the sheetrock edges in the chin room, theres a little ledge they love to hop up on and they chew the sheetrock and it really pisses me off lol. i'd figure they'd chew the pine corners now but instead they stick their lil noses somewhere else in the room and chew up moldings in the corner and whatever else they can get their lil teeth into.

gotta love these lil furballs.

CASTLE OF CHIN!!!
Here's the new chinnie house for Jake and Elwood. All night long they hop all over the freakin' place. They LOVE it.
Right now it's messy so don't mind the poops in the cage.

Health / Re: Chin won't eat... any suggestions?
« on: September 19, 2009, 03:49:39 PM »
So sorry to hear about Stewie. I recently had to put my 8 yr old chin Pippin to sleep from an impaction. This was secondary to an ear infection and other things. The baytril had the same effect on him. He stopped eating and was in a lot of pain. Pain injections did not help him.

I am also happy to hear that your guy is still moving around. I was syringe feeding my Pippin strawberry flavored Ensure. He was eating tiny bits of fresh parsley. My vet suggested some kind of enema--I think it was a saline or water flush to try to help move the poop along. It sounds like you have a good exotic vet. I hope that things get better for you and Stewie real soon :-)

Hey there

My gf's first Chin, Chili, had an impaction. First it was an eye infection then he had trouble eating and it got to his stomach. Pippin, the 2nd one, was put to sleep also after discovery of another impaction. Pip's troubles started with an ear infection. Both were about 8-9 years old.

Well I'm happy to say that after my gf lost her 2nd Chin, Pippin, we decided to adopt another. We tried our hand with a female, but it just didn't work out. She was about 8 years old, did not like human contact at ALL, and loved to bite. We just weren't up to that challenge to we gave her to a vet friend of ours who homes Chins, in exchange for 2 boys. We named them Jake and Elwood. Jake is about 3 months old and Elwood is maybe 4 or 5? El always looks after Jake and they are always together causing mischief. I can't wait to post more pics and share my adventures with all of you!
