General Chat / big boy's big butt
« on: December 16, 2007, 03:01:19 PM »
I finally opened the run for one of my males, Big Boy this week. He is a pretty good sized standard male and was having trouble making it into the run... and then back into his cage. I wanted to share a picture of his big behind peeping at me through his hole.

He gets into the run by jumping and darting in quickly.. struggling to get his back end through all the way. Getting out is another story.  ;D he's getting used to it again. These girls will most likely help him to shed a little weight and make it easier on him.

General Breeder Chat / irritated male
« on: December 11, 2007, 06:01:03 PM »
I have a male who I've been watching on an off recently. I posted about him with a sudden wet jaw and it was thought he was sprayed by a female in the run (we have not opened her hole yet) and his jaw was dry by the end of the day anyways so I didn't think anything more.

this male ended up catching my eye again with his fur in between his back legs being wet. I closed his hold and watched to see if it could be a bladder infection and it too went away quickly.

Now I notice he has a line of what seems to be a urine stain up the middle of his stomach that goes about halfway up his belly towards his chin. And the fur seems a little damp between his back legs, again.

I've been checking him for hair rings and hes always shown up clean.

He's acting a little irritated also. He's always been on and off.. more off normally but now he makes the noise females make when they stand and warn that they will spray.. and he stands up almost like he will spray also.

He eats normal.. (hes never been a really heavy eater..) and he chews normal and takes treats. I think he may be irritated with me for closing his hole.. but I didn't want him to give my female anything when I noticed his wet fur.

He is surrounded by females (beside, above and below) and they may be in season. (just wanted to add that :)  )

Do these 'symptoms' ring anyones bell? I didn't want to stress him with an un-needed vet visit.

Health / chin w/eye problem
« on: December 03, 2007, 11:36:15 AM »
I have a chin that isn't in breeding that has what we (the vet and I) think is an eye allergy. I took him to the best vet around for exotic animals and she said she thinks he has sensative eyes and gave me an triple anti-biotic eye ointment to get any bacteria out and clear it up. She did a complete  physical and says he is very healthy and is not worried it is anything more then allergies.

The problem I am having now is some of the ointment gets wiped onto the fur around his eyes and it hardens and looks horrible. You can tell it bothers him and I tried using a wet wipe and it wont help it come out. If anyone has any experience with the eye problems- is there a way to keep it from caking up or will I just need to let it come out on its own? It looks gross and his actual eyes look better already. But the fur around it is what seems to bother him now.

General Breeder Chat / glass water bottles
« on: November 26, 2007, 11:40:23 AM »
I used the glass water bottles and have noticed they are begining to look cloudy at the mouth where the water is licked out inside the glass tube. Has anyone else noticed this?

I clean mine daily and boil them weekly to keep them sterile. My oldest bottles are the ones that are now showing up a little cloudy.

General Breeder Chat / supplement anyone???
« on: November 13, 2007, 06:55:01 PM »
I was making my own supplement and had a recipe from the internet.. but was thought it wouldn't hurt to ask if anyone else gives their chins a supplement.. and what is in it. The one I've used has Rolled oats, Barley flakes, Cracked Wheat, red wheat bran, wheat germ, flax seed and sunflower seeds (but I cut back the sunflower seeds)

General Chat / little miss attitude
« on: November 04, 2007, 09:00:10 PM »
One of my new chins is a mean little girl. She is moody.. sometimes she doesn't mind me giving her attention and other times she sprays me (thank god shes not got a perfect aim!) I have her in quarantine now awaiting her fungal culture results.. so I have her in small cage in a seperate room and the cage opens from the top.. so I have to slowly stick my hand in and see if she approves. She bit me today when I got her to clean her cage and sprayed me when I put her back in and moved her hay away from her water bottle.

Does anyone else have and seriously moody chins? and is there any way other then time and trying to gain trust to get her to maybe calm down? all my other chins are sweethearts and Weeza seems a bit stressed.

She will be going back into the chin room this week b/c nothing has shown up as a fungus on the culture and we arent expecting it to. Maybe she hates being isolated- I'll have to work with her and see!

Health / sudden drooling??
« on: October 29, 2007, 12:17:43 PM »
I moved one of my mosaic males into his a run where his new mate is over the weekend. He has always been healthy and that is why I decided to move him to begin to slowly introduce them. He was acting fine and I was checking him this morning and noticed his chin was real wet. He also had a very purple spot on his ear- like a bruise. I felt his bottom jaw and it felt normal- no real bumpy spots or anything. I closed his run off as soon as he went back in the cage. I've checked on him all throughout the day and now his chin is almost completely dry. He eats great- acts great.. so I'm going to continue checking him several times a day to see if it happens again.

Is there something that can cause a sudden drooling problem? Could it be because of him and his mate sniffing thru the run wires? Could he have gotten injured (his ear was bruised over night for sure.. he was fine last night) and had it cause it? His eyes are dry as can be and bright. No runny nose or anything. Any ideas?

I'll post a picture of his ear later tonight when I get a chance if that would help.

Health / new chin with a problem
« on: October 23, 2007, 07:29:03 PM »
I was feeding and watering my chins tonight when I noticed one of my new beige females had a funny looking lip. It almost looks like it was bit by a litter mate or something. I took pictures but they are a bit blurry. between her nose and lip is bald and a little mis-shaped. I hope you can see it from the pictures but before we take her to the vet I wanted some feedback on what it could be.

Other Pets / new family member..
« on: October 14, 2007, 07:42:20 AM »
We adopted a puppy on Friday  :::grins::

She is beautiful. She was categorized as 'American Terrier' which translates to American Staforshire Terrier. She was with her mother and litter mates. The mother was such a sweet heart and so were all her brothers & sisters. They all jumped up to greet and lick us to death. I was so taken by a mother being so gentle and friendly with her puppies and strangers and the puppies were just like her. We got a little girl that looks just like the mom- shes black with a little white on her chest and paws. She is 3 months old and already 22 lbs. Her name is Onyx  ::nod:: Our Boxer/mix Ellie absolutely adores her and is just as excited as we are. Here she is:

General Chat / Moldy Hay
« on: October 02, 2007, 04:36:13 PM »
Is there a way you can visually tell hay is moldy?

I buy my hay cubes from a feed store and keep them in a large rubbermaid bin without the top closed so the air can circulate. Some of my chins won't eat the cubes so I break them up and feed them the looser hay. I check out all of it and smell it to make sure it isn't weird.

Is it possible to tell if something is wrong? I would hate to feed them anything moldy and have them suffer.

How is it best to be stored and what are any signs it is time to throw it out and get new?

General Chat / fresh air: bad?
« on: September 30, 2007, 01:37:10 PM »
Is it bad to have the windows open in your chin's room? It is a great time to air out the house but I wasn't sure if the chins could catch anything from the outside environment since they are only used to being indoors all their lives.

General Chat / Show question
« on: September 25, 2007, 06:48:19 PM »
When you show an animal you use it's brand/year letter/# as it's 'ID'. What difference does it make if it is an animal you have purchased from another breeder? It will not have your brand name, but can you still enter it into a show to see what quality animal it is? Also- does a breeder get points for only the animals they produce or any animal they enter that is in their herd that may be from another breeder? I hope these questions aren't confusing  :blush2: I'd like to make sure I understand things correctly.

General Breeder Chat / Pregnancy question
« on: September 24, 2007, 06:00:34 PM »
What is the best way to keep a pregnant female good and healthy during her pregnancy and after she has given birth? I have heard different ways of going about it. Calf Manna the first two months seems to be mentioned most often.. but what does everyone here do? I'm sure not everyone does it the same.

News / I need some support :(
« on: September 14, 2007, 12:35:19 PM »
Ok- This is really hard but I finally did call it quits with my fiance. It's been a really rocky 3 year relationship. He did almost everything he could to hurt me.. and I finally decided it was better to end it. I had been in a very bad abusive relationship with my sons father which ended with him being arrested and a restraining order. That is now a lot better and he has grown up and see's our son every other weekend. The guy I was engaged to wasn't a lot better.. controling and lied a lot.. the whole package. He was great with my son and loved me to death but he is too young for serious stuff (hes a few years younger then me- in his lower 20's) and he did things to me I never should have put up with but I did. He lost his respect for things recently and I found out he had been lying and other things.. and I couldn't do it anymore.

It's really hard for me but I'm sticking to it this time. I have 'left' him many times before but this time I made him move out. I need a little support now  :'(

thanks for reading
