Health / Chinchilla bedding
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:43:33 PM »
I thought I would get some opinions from the many experts on here. I always use pine shavings for my 5 chins...We have a shredder her at work and as i was emptying the bag...I wondered if that was safe to use with the pine bedding. It is in such tiny pieces..I wouldn't think that would hurt them but would it??  ::shrug::

I need some thought on this subject and I probably already know what will be said..Don't change a good thing that I have had absolutley NO problems with at all??!!

Thank you!  ::silly::

General Chat / Finally...a loving breakthrough with Gizmo
« on: September 23, 2011, 01:42:00 PM »
First, I would just like to say that this site is great..all of the people who truly love their animals and have rescued some from such neglectful situations. It is so sad to hear and see people who abuse animals as there is no excuse for it but thank goodness for the lucky little furry souls who end up in loving homes. Kudos to all you "rescue" Moms and Dads out there.

Anyway, just love to share a happy or cute story once in a while. My Gizmo, a TOV Tan male, and one of 5 chins I have...well he is probably the most "stand offish" of all 5 chins....been the hardest to get to a really trusting point with me. Last evening, I went into the chinny haven for treat time and Gizmo came right up to me and put his paw in my hand (it was like we were holding hands  :blush2: :)...AWWW..I melted..the cute little furry butt...He loves me!!! (and/or he was sucking up as he was well aware there was a goji berry or raisin coming in the next few seconds!!  :2funny:)  I choose to believe the first reason!  ::silly:: ;D

General Chat / weird scents makes for a ticked off chin!
« on: August 23, 2011, 09:12:12 AM »
I am basically on a set schedule with all 5 of my furry buddies...so at approximately 8:00PM, it is chin treat time. On some occasions, my daughter's goldfish will get fed at the same time. The other evening, I fed the goldfish their flakes and then proceeded to feed Kingston (a black velvet) his cheerio...WOW...he must have smelled the goldfish flakes and did a rolling click clacking sound (thoroughly disgusted with me!  ::tickedoff::). Once I washed my hands and then tried again, he was fine but it was so funny..they are all such balls of furry individualistic personalities...I LOVE it!  ;D rofl

General Chat / Kingston-new baby with "furr-chewing habit" UPDATE
« on: June 21, 2011, 10:06:33 AM »
Good Afternoon, fellow chin lovers. I just wanted to give everyone an update. A few months ago, I adopted a male black velvet chinchilla from a breeder here in New York. The breeder was very nice but could not breed "Kingston" as he had a furr chewing problem which apparently is genetic in some cases. I was not sure what I was getting into but was hopeful that I could nurture him into stopping this habit and provide him with a loving home. He wasn't as bad as I thought when I picked him up but he had a good portion of his furr on his right side chewed off. Well, knock on wood, he has not chewed since I brought him home and his beautiful black furr is entirely grown back..he is gorgeous and the sweetest laid back little dude! I set him up in his own condo with tons and tons of activities and I think maybe this helped. Of course, I understand that this habit can be like chewing nails for humans and maybe that is what I can relate to as it took me nearly 30 years to stop that nonsense! So I know there is hope. Kingston looks like a show chin!!! I am so proud of my litle guy...course I laugh at times thinking maybe the breeder just stuck him with a girl that he didnt approve of and he started chewing himself! If this is the case, then I cannot blame him!!! LOL...Everyone have a great day! I just wanted to pass along a happy story as I have been reading some tragic ones and thought maybe a nice one would be good!  ::silly:: ;)

General Chat / A New Baby in the home!
« on: March 29, 2011, 06:53:30 AM »
Good Morning, fellow Chinchilla lovers. I recently went onto Hoobly.com and once again lucked out on this site. I met a breeder from Middletown NY who was selling a black velvet chinchilla. He cannot breed him as he has a fur chewing issue. Needless to say, I drove to Syracuse last evening to pick him up and he is a sweet doll...gorgeous..very fluffy. Yes, he has some furr chewed but I am hoping maybe we can help him to cease his problem eventually. He only cried a bit on the way home and last evening. He ate and took a nice bath immediately after transplanting him into his new home. He even took a shredded wheat from me this morning! I will post pics soon (do not want to be snapping a camera at him this early...we are giving him time to settle in and relax.) I have read quite a bit on the furr chewing and realize that it is hereditary..he definitely does not seem to have any health issues.

Anyway, we love him immensely already and have welcomed his sweet little self into our Chin home. Oh, the hubby named him Burbank..not quite sure what I think of that name..think I may have to argue that point.! rofl :2funny: ::nod::

Chit Chat / NYS Fair
« on: August 30, 2010, 08:05:48 AM »
I finally went to the New York State Fair..1st time ever and had a ball. Crowded but definitely an experience one should have. The only thing that bothers me and that bothers me at every fair I attend...Why can't they just stop having games where the prize is a goldfish in a plastic bag..it is so wrong! I wanted to rescue them all...this is such a cruel thing to do. My daughter has a good size tank and she has had her 5  goldfish for a while now and they are thriving..I just could not take a chance and bring one home from a place like that...they probably are not that healthy. I just think it should no longer be allowed. There is my complaint for the day! ::tickedoff::

General Chat / Spoiled but COOL Chins!
« on: July 09, 2010, 09:57:27 AM »
These temps up here in New York are out of control so the Chinnies were a major concern for me. Ask and you shall receive...it is great to know fellow animal lovers! They now have their very own air conditioner in their very own room...We had them in our bedroom so it was a bit cramped but my 4 year old daughter LOVED it..called it "camping with the Chins"... rofl......and boy do they love the TV on all night!  :2funny:
oh, I can rest easy knowing that our furry little buddies are cool and comfortable. WHEW, that was more than a monkey on my back...that was an entire family of gorillas! ::nod::..Hope everyone's little furr balls are cool and happy! NOw I can try and enjoy this heat wave! ;D ::silly::

Q & A / Snacking input!
« on: June 07, 2010, 12:21:14 PM »
Hello everyone. I am just looking at getting some opinions on what everyone does as far as snacking/treats with their chinchillas. I have had my boys for 2 years and all is great..poops are normal. Knock on wood, I have never had a problem. I now have 2 girls and have gone into the same practices with them as I have established over a period of two years with the boys. They are each given 2 snacks an evening...for example...maybe 2 raisins a piece and a rosebud a piece. Of course, they have their daily staples of hay and pellets and water...I am just wondering what others do with their furry fluff balls. I love to spoil them of course and cannot help myself but I know better than to over do. My parents (RIP Dad) always over did feeding with their dogs and they were always well cared for but over weight. I am just curious...The toys I give them all are made of healthy stuff like hay and alfalfa etc. Thank You for your input!  ::silly:: ::)
