Health / Water?
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:14:56 PM »
A quick search on the inter-web gets mixed results of:

"NEVER USE DISTILLED WATER"
and
"DISTILLED OR PURIFIED ONLY"

My chins have been drinking distilled water for as long as I could remember.. so what type of water should I give my chins? Purified? Distilled?  ::shrug::

Q & A / Picky about hay, they are.
« on: December 05, 2009, 12:03:44 AM »
My chinchillas are very very picky about hay, whenever i fill the hay rack, i can find about 50% of it "dug" out of the hay rack and not eaten, most of it is the stem of the timothy which doesnt really seem tasty, however, i have never found the leafy part or the flowerhead left on the ground at all!

Are your chinchillas picky about hay and what parts of hay they eat? Does your chinchilla extremely enjoy the flowerhead, leafy parts of the timothy hay?

Q & A / Dream?
« on: November 05, 2009, 10:11:01 AM »
Quick question for those who might have noticed..
Do chinchillas dream?

Right now its about 8 in the morning and both of my chins are asleep, i am on my laptop just surfing the net and all of a sudden one of my chin barks twice and wakes up for about ten seconds, then she lays back down into her comfy fleece covered tube and goes back to sleep. It was weird but it was so cute :)

Q & A / poo poo size question
« on: August 19, 2009, 12:38:24 PM »
ever since we got kiwi and totoro there's been a difference in poo poo sizes (huge difference).. Totoro is 5 days older than kiwi and her average stool size is roughly 3/8th of an inch and sometimes (night time) her stool size raises up to 1/2 of an inch if not more than that! Kiwi's stool sizes are "noticeably" smaller in size measuring at an average of just over 1/4th of an inch. Both chins are eating and drinking the right amount and both are active, Kiwi (w/ smaller poo) is actually "hyper-active". Totoro is just slightly bigger/older  than kiwi at 4 months 9 days old... should this be of concern? Or is it normal for chins to have different poo sizes from each other? ::shrug::

Q & A / new chin owner with worries...
« on: June 28, 2009, 10:54:09 PM »
Hello to everyone in chinchilla club!

i am a new chinchilla owner, i currently have 2 chins at my care and I've noticed something that troubles me slightly...

Kiwi and Totoro both moved into my place on the same day, Kiwi being the younger (6 weeks old) and Totoro older (roughly 7 weeks old). The two has been sleeping next to each other and/or on top of each other and the relationship between the two has been fairly well. But I've noticed that Totoro is eating alot more than Kiwi and also have a bigger poop size, Kiwi's stools are smaller in size but it is firm, dark and does not smell. I have also noticed that while Totoro is eating next to the pellet feeder and Kiwi will stand up to grab pellet for herself, Totoro will "bark" at Kiwi once. ::shrug::  Totoro also "mounts" kiwi from time to time. No fighting has occurred.

Back ground on the chins:

both chins are females, Totoro lost her mother at about 3 weeks old but she grew up just fine. Kiwi had a brother and mommy living with her just until she was separated recently.

so to sum it up
1. Totoro is a week older than Kiwi.
2. Totoro is eating more than Kiwi.
3. Totoro appares more dominant.
4. Kiwi's poop smaller in size.

do i separate the chins or does this not seem like a serious problem? Should i just let them get used to the new environment or should i take proper action? and what would that proper action be?

Thanks a million!

-Eddie
