Q & A / Re: Introducing baby to dust baths
« on: April 26, 2012, 09:08:47 PM »
The waiting till mom is healed is a myth. I dust on dusting day if kits were born that morning or not. And often when labor seems stalled I get out the dust baths to get things moving. It is perfectly safe to give mom a dust bath. All the big breeders and Ranchers dust whatever day they were planning on dusting new babies or not and no harm comes from it

General Chat / Re: health effects from chinchilla dust?

It is better to be safe than sorry. I wear a mask or have the windows and the barn door open. Since building the barn and getting the chinchillas out of the house it does seem like we have had fewer upper respiratory issues

The biggest risk of back yard grasses is intestinal parasites that can be picked up through the grass.

Breeding 101 / Re: How to make chins breed?
« on: January 29, 2012, 01:53:10 PM »
What is your goal for breeding them? in particular the sapphire and the white together? Is the female even a sapphire carrier? sapphires are recessive you will not get anything sapphire from a white female unless she is also a carrier. Otherwise it is a huge risk in quality both sapphires and whites have weak fur qualities.

Dawnna had hip surgery and is getting caught back up. She took her site down for a little while so that she could focus on recovering. It is back up and She is again filling orders

Its is always sad when that happens. that is one of the main reasons I am considering switching from colonies to just Runs

There is always a chance they will turn on each other, Any time you have more than 1 in a cage it is a risk. I have lost more mares to breeding than to same sex pairs so you Always have to be vigilant.

Breeding 101 / Re: pregnant chin due 3 days ago still no babies
« on: September 20, 2011, 07:19:52 PM »
Gestation for a chinchilla is 111-120 days. 3 days late is nothing. I would not worry. And they may have mated and not concieved at that time and had another mating a little later.

people who get thier chinchillas potty traied isn't as much training the chinchillas as training yourself to know where they like to pee
