General Chat / Re: Do you boycott pet stores?
« on: September 25, 2009, 03:04:50 AM »
i do not support the sale of chins and/or any other animals (birds/turtles/fish) sold at petsmart/petco, but however, i do still go in the stores to see what they have from time to time just to see some of the products and look at their chinchillas (sometimes it makes me feel bad that i can't rescue them, but if i do get em' they would just get more chins to sell). However, after seeing a so called "animal specialist" looking utterly CLUELESS on how to deal with a sick chin (trouble breathing, looks like his last few breaths) and "SCARED" to pick up the chin, i have ZERO respect for petco and their employees. so much for calling their employees "animal (care) specialists" when they don't even know to deal with a sick animal.

I get free feed from my breeder because i am military and the rest of items i get for my chins are all via online shopping (chinchilla friendly sites).. its cheaper than stores and product quality is way beyond chain store quality.

Q & A / Re: Diet recommendations
« on: September 21, 2009, 12:50:06 PM »
The only reason I switched from pellets to a diet with pellets and other munchies was simply because (when he was eating) he ate much more than normal. I assumed it was because he preferred it over normal pellets.

You said that your chins grind their teeth in appreciation. Stewie grinds his teeth during the force feeding. I assumed it was because he didn't like the forcefeeding. (added to the fact that he trys to wiggle away the whole time)

force feeding? why was stewie force fed, was your chinchilla not eating "at all" before?

he might be eating much more than "normal" because of the fact that there are other treat like products contained with the pellets. what was the original pellets fed to him? must of us use Mazuri, Oxbox or Tradition. and they all come highly recommended. I use mazuri myself. and for hay, i use Oxbow western timothy hay. Occasionally i do put some alfalfa cubes in the cage to mix it up.

do you have a small digital scale? I would also weight my chins about twice every month to ensure they are still gaining weight (they are only 4 months old + change right now) or at least holding their weight.

Q & A / Re: poo poo size question
« on: August 19, 2009, 03:36:04 PM »
They are caged together and eating the same type of food, i see both of the chins eating and drinking pretty often (being just gotten out of the military, I've been sitting in my room for a whole day and observing them  ::nod::). Their stool's firmness and moisture content are of equal. Kiwi's been having smaller stool since we've got her (roughly 2 months ago) is there anything I should do about this? I am feeding them mazuri pellets and oxbow timothy hay with the occasional alfalfa/timothy hay cubes, rarely any treats.

thanks for the quick reply Jo Ann  :)

Q & A / poo poo size question
« on: August 19, 2009, 12:38:24 PM »
ever since we got kiwi and totoro there's been a difference in poo poo sizes (huge difference).. Totoro is 5 days older than kiwi and her average stool size is roughly 3/8th of an inch and sometimes (night time) her stool size raises up to 1/2 of an inch if not more than that! Kiwi's stool sizes are "noticeably" smaller in size measuring at an average of just over 1/4th of an inch. Both chins are eating and drinking the right amount and both are active, Kiwi (w/ smaller poo) is actually "hyper-active". Totoro is just slightly bigger/older  than kiwi at 4 months 9 days old... should this be of concern? Or is it normal for chins to have different poo sizes from each other? ::shrug::

Health / Re: Chopstick
« on: July 22, 2009, 11:19:50 PM »
i am guessing that you are referring to the chopsticks they give you at like a chinese take out place... do not give them those chop sticks to chew on, chop sticks splinters too easily.. and the nice looking ones have coating or paint all over it, and i am pretty sure you would want to have elephant tusk chop sticks so you can have your chins chew on it =D

Health / Re: mushy poop with pus
« on: July 18, 2009, 01:13:38 AM »
i have no idea what it is, but i do have a few questions..

pretty much as soon as you taken out the pellets as diet her poop has became better, but as soon as the pellets goes back in, the poop got worse? What kind of pellets are you using? i would suggest changing her pellets to a better brand if it already isn't (ex. Oxbow or Mazuri)

Q & A / Re: Angry little man
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:23:06 PM »
Maybe you should give your chin sometime to adjust to the new surroundings?  maybe even use some of the old stuff from the old cage into his new cage with him? I don't think you shouldn let your chin out until the chin is comfortable with you. When you offer treats, how does the little one react? Do not wave the treat in his face trying to get his attention, put it in your palm and let the little one come to you naturally and then very slowly move your hand out of his cage and give him some space.

Make sure Rambo is eating and drinking water as well. I believe he just needs time to adjust, and since he had a rough life, he might need a even longer time to gain your trust. Patience goes a long way my friend!

Best of luck to you and welcome to the club! You will learn a lot from here, like I did!

Q & A / Re: New Chins!
« on: July 15, 2009, 08:05:11 PM »
hello!

my chins will always come to my arm and start nibbling, just simply offer something else for them to nibble on? for example a new apple branch? Or often times i will use my finger of my other hand and just gently lift their heads up a little, usually it works for me, maybe it will work for you!

Hello everyone, here is an update on the chins!

well, i've moved both chins to the mansion and they seem to love it very much.. 2 food bowls are in place, 2 water bottles, and 2 hay racks.

they are sharing most of the items together and they snuggle with eachother during their sleep/nap times. seems like happy chins to me   :)

there are always plenty of food and both loose timothy and alfalfa hay cubes around so they won't fight for food, they play nicely with eachother as well during play time!

i am having the best times with the chins and thanks to the chinchilla club, i am learning so much about these wonderful pets!
i will post some photos asap!
