A Rodent Love Story

Candy and Chico as lovebirds

Our male chinchilla Chico is a very handsome and irresistible little fellow with a gorgeous bushy tail. During daytime he sleeps peacefully in his cage and he wakes up early in the evening. Chico takes full advantage of the fact that one look into his big dark eyes makes me melt. He clearly has got a Latin temperament and is a real ladies men. I bet he knows only too well that I adore him.

As Chico was the first chinchilla in our house, we introduced him to our guinea pigs. He always rattled his cage when they were running free during playtime as if he wanted to join them. One day we decided to let him play with the piggies, keeping a close eye on them to see how they would react to Chico's presence. Things actually worked out fine as they were all very young and playful.

Chico immediately fancied our cavy Candy and always trailed behind her without giving the other ones a second glance. Chico was in love and acted like it. He tried to impress the love of his heart by showing her his best jumps, sometimes he even imitated a kangaroo or a squirrel. He started wagging his tail at her, uttering funny hiccup sounds and each time he took a dustbath, he splashed the sand out with his tail, then he came peeking to check if Candy had noticed it. Why did this gorgeous piggie failed to notice how hard he was trying to impress her? She looks so beautiful with those sparkling dark eyes full of mischief, even though her ears are so small, she is missing a tail, she wheeks in a funny way and waggles around. Poor Chico!

Candy of course allowed Chico to sniffle her and she chattered merrily to the other guinea pigs when he tried to groom her. They were friends as far as she was concerned, but nothing more. Chico became more and more insistent and even tried mounting Candy, which she did not approve at all. I never saw her rush away that quickly.

As we were afraid that Chico would hurt Candy with his amorous intentions, we decided it was time for Chico to get a female companion of his own kind. She would take his mind off Candy and turn this crush for our cavy girl around into worshipping her. Therefore we visited several pet stores until we found our lovely Darling, but that is another story for one of the next issues.

Today Chico still has a soft spot for Candy and I let them rub noses from time to time. Chico now lives happily as Darling's male and father of her wonderful fluffy babies.
