Q & A / How do you travel/ take holidays?
« on: June 07, 2014, 10:46:03 AM »
Haven't got any trips planned juuuuuust yet, but might do sometime soon, but I'm concerned about my little guy... I've got a pet hotel nearby, should be ok since I BOUGHT popsicle from them in the first place... but won't he be upset about the change in environment? And I spoil him rotten, so I bet he'll be unhappy about being "neglected" when no one spoils him all day long... or should I hope for the whole "absence makes the heart grow fonder" thing?

General Chat / Our plans have almost reached fruition!!! SQUEEK!!!
« on: June 07, 2014, 10:42:36 AM »
Rejoice my fellow Rodentius Rex!!! Our plan has almost reached completion! SQUEEK!!!

Over the past year, we have collectively gathered our pet human's Car Ownership Documents and used them for our master plan... ownership of our own raisin factory!!! SQUEEK!!!
(do not worry about our humans, my brethren... it's healthier for them to walk more. Besides, they never let us drive. SQUEEK!!!)

Using those cars as collateral, the banks have agreed to finance our takeover... in a matter of hours, I will submit the final documents, and we will have access to unlimitted raisins!!! SQUEEK!!!

We no longer have to hide our usage of our human's computers while they sleep! SQUEEK!!! Raisin Divinity will soon be ours! SQUEEK!!! For our glorious cause!!! SQUEEK!!!

Your sinsqueekly,

Prince Popsicle, his royal Squeekness, Monarch of Poopsalot and Night of the Dining Table.

Q & A / Chin climbs on my arm and nibbles my skin???
« on: April 28, 2014, 01:38:10 PM »
OK, I thought it might be popsicle's attempts to groom me or something, but looked at some videos and it looks different.

Anyhow, under CERTAIN conditions where both he and my arm are covered in shadow by a cave or overhang or whatever just above us, if I put my hand near him with my arm almost horizontal, he will usually climb up my arm with his legs on either side of my hand and arm, nip a piece of my skin in his teeth, and gently tug tug tug at it.

Is this normal?

it is in those VERY specific conditions... he doesn't mind me sticking my arm in his cage, in his house, in his den, picking him up, etc. and he doesn't bite me or bark at me or climb on me often (I wish he would climb on me more, actually!)

What's going on?

... should I post a video or something?

General Chat / Brother threated to report me to RSPCA
« on: April 03, 2014, 09:26:24 PM »
I named my Chin "Popsicle" cause he melts in hot weather.

Soon after, I learnt about chin toilet habits, and started nicknaming him  poop-sicle.

...

My bro is like "the poor thing! Don't call him such things!"

... lol.

General Chat / Ways to save electricity...
« on: March 26, 2014, 03:11:16 PM »
Boy my electricity bills have gone up so much due to keeping the AC on 24/7... keeping a chinchilla in an equatorial climate is no joke. Any suggestions on how to keep cooling costs down?
...
I have an idea that should work, but I'm not too keen on it... looking for alternatives...

Health / Why are we supposed to introduce different foods gradually?
« on: March 24, 2014, 06:45:01 AM »
I like to give my Popsicle a bit of variety in case he gets bored, so I change up his pellets every now and then. I usually just wait til one pack is empty then switch to a new pack though.
Why are we advised to use 50% mixes and such though? (I didn't know at first so I didn't do it, doesn't seem to have any problems though)
Is it cause chins might be fussy about trying out new foods? ... that would surprise me, since I heard my chin isn't unusual in that he will chew on and attempt to eat just about anything that is chewy or crunchy or plant based or... heck or basically anything that he thinks has even a POSSIBILITY of being food... ... ... the thought of my little fella actually refusing to eat ACTUAL chinchilla food sounds weird to me, lol...
...
Nah, can't really imagine it... "Squeek! Oh look, wooden furniture! (attempts to eat it)... oh, look, books and papers! (attempts to eat it) fingernail clippings, dead skin, rubbish, chips! (chews on them!) hmm, here's some of my own poop! (tries to eat it) ... oh, wait, a new brand of food pellets? (turns away in disgust)"
hahaha...

Ok, but, really, has that actually happened to anyone? Anyone have a non-sick chin refusing food? ... or maybe my chap is just a greedy non-nom-nommer?

Q & A / Should I let Popsicle have a family?
« on: March 22, 2014, 12:48:52 AM »
Erm... I love my little fella... feeling rather parental...
And now I know how MY parents feel lol... I'm having the ol' parental urge to find a nice loving wife for my kid, and see him with a child and family of his own... (not gonna let him leave my house though!)

...

Is this a good idea? Or am I just being unrealistic?

Cause, I have no intention of becoming a Chin breeder... I would limit them to a 1 child policy, and that's it. ... Only reason I didn't start him off with another female is cause I wanted him to bond faster and stronger with me, and having a rival for his affections might have gotten in the way. ... oh, yeah, I guess that there were logistics too, but mainly it was so he would bond solely to me...

...

so... happy with things the way they are now, but what would make Popsicle happiest? Are Chins social enough to want a wife and offspring? Or would he be equally happy with another male to buddy buddy with? Or is he fine with just me?

... Also, I'm 35, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to outlive the little fella... that makes me sad... ... now I know why Chinese and Japanese say there is a special section of Hell reserved especially for children who die before their parents... (utter nonsense, to me, but I understand how people felt it went against the whole filial piety thing)

... I guess I might be looking for ways to make Popsicle immortal, or at least pass down something of himself to another generation? :(

...

What's the oldest recommended for a male Chin to breed? Maybe once he's advancing in years, I'll get him a young wife, and I'll have Popsicle Jr? ... Or just let him have some illegitimate kids with some random female Chin belonging to someone else, and just take 1 male for myself?

... I'm... confused...

...

Maybe I just need to get married and have kids of my own, lol...

General Chat / How do you give treats? ;)s
« on: March 15, 2014, 04:11:58 PM »
Am I the only person who almost always gives treats by holding it in my mouth and letting the little one take it from me? ;)

Trying to shoulder train him too by making him sit on my shoulder for a few seconds before I take a treat, put it in my mouth, and offer it to him. Then once he's finished eating, it's off to his favourite dismount point :I have a mattress leaning on my bed, and he jumps onto the mattress, slides/runs down the slope, lands on the bed, and takes off running to play hide and seek with me. ;)

General Chat / Why Chinchillas are better than Rabbits.
« on: March 15, 2014, 11:51:48 AM »
You know the legend of the Easter Bunny?
That bunny that goes around once a year hiding eggs for kids to find?

I present to you: The Legend of the All Year Round Chinchilla.

Every single day that you let your chinchilla out to play, he will hide presents for you all over the play area. For those of you who use your bedroom or living room, you get to enjoy even more devious and creative hiding places!
The best part is, unlike the Easter Bunny, which is an untrue legend, the All Year Round Chinchilla lives in each and every Chin loving household, guaranteed 100%  !!!

...

As against that, the Easter bunny is supposed to leave colored hard boiled eggs, or colored chocolate eggs or such.... we get poop. ... lucky us.

General Chat / I think Popsicle almost died today...
« on: March 14, 2014, 11:43:50 AM »
I let my little guy out to play today, and after a while I noticed he has what looked like a food pellet in his hand and was chewing it. But the color looked wrong so I took it from his paw.

... It was a 20mg Prozac capsule. EEK!!! ... I'm pretty sure that's a fatal dosage for a Chin, right? Lucky I got it away uneaten... must have fallen on the floor while sorting pills... :(

General Chat / Chinchilla Growth Rate?
« on: March 08, 2014, 09:23:54 AM »
Hi... little curious about how big my Popsicle will grow up to be...

He weighed 500g at 6 months old, and he now weighs 540g at 7 months old... what should I expect his final weight to look like? (curses for not buying an electronic scale when I first got him at 4 months!)

Health / Would this work on a non-eater???
« on: March 07, 2014, 07:48:16 AM »
Was tossing around ideas in my head, and a few things struck me.

I heard that, the problem with Chinchillas that stop eating for a long time is that the bacteria they need for digestion die out.
I also heard that chin's eating their own poop does no harm.

...

Was wondering, if, for chinchillas that stopped eating, whether it is a good idea to (along with critical care) add ground up poop from a different, healthy chinchilla to their menu?
Sure, it SOUNDS nasty, but I was informed that chinchilla poop is not only fairly nutritious for them, but it is a GREAT medium for the GOOD bacteria that chins need to digest hay.
...

Can anyone here share their knowledge on why this would or wouldn't work?

General Chat / Yes, milord?
« on: March 04, 2014, 04:37:13 PM »
ERK I knew I've been pampering Popsicle, but I think I maight have overdone it and spoilt him... I long lost the chance for him to acknowledge me as master or owner, but he probably now regards me as peon or something...

Today I was giving him a cheek rub, and thought is give him an apple stick since he was so receptive. ... After a while, I paused to adjust my glasses, and he stopped eating his apple tick and gave me a look. No, sorry, a GLARE.
I resumed scratching under his chin, and he gave me a rodent nod, and resumed stripping the bark off that stick.
... And when he was done eating, he was all "and now it's time for me to exit the cage so we can play tag!"
... That naughty fella...
