Chinchilla Growth Rate?
« on: March 08, 2014, 09:23:54 AM »

Hi... little curious about how big my Popsicle will grow up to be...

He weighed 500g at 6 months old, and he now weighs 540g at 7 months old... what should I expect his final weight to look like? (curses for not buying an electronic scale when I first got him at 4 months!)

That's a pretty good size for a male. Their average weight is 500g. If he does get heavier it will probably take a month to see a difference. Females are usually heavier in the 700-800g range.
I weighed mine regularly starting at 3 months when I got him and there was a very steady increase until about 6 months, then it tapered off. He had pretty good blood but not standard to standard breeding which I would have preferred. The breeder was trying for a TOV.
Now Kulu's weight bounces between 500-510 now at 14 months and lately has been running on the low side. They usually stop growing after a year but mutation colors can take longer.

Popsicle: I'm not fat! Squeek! I'm just big boned! Squeek!!!

... he doesn't look all that big, actually, so it really might be his bones! he eats a TON of pellets, and gets a tiny amount of suppplements now and then, so he might have thicker bones than a normal chin? ... cause he is NOT scared of heights... I let him run around my room, and he used to be scared of heights more than about 6 inches, but he gradually got used to jumping up and down all sorts of heights (logically, if you can jump UP a certain height, it shouldn't damage you to jump down from that height, I think?), and now he's pretty confident with jumping down from 3 feet high. (it scares me a lot though, so I stop him whenever I notice it) And he jumps UP 2 foot ledges with total confidence. So I don't think he's overweight?

No two chinchillas are going to be the exact same size. I wouldn't worry about his weight unless you're feeding him junk food. 3 feet is an okay height to jump from. I wouldn't want him getting much higher outside of his cage because I'd be concerned about him landing onto something that can hurt him.
