Thanks Steven! I do believe now that the chin must have been 6 months old, and not 6 weeks. She was a big girl... looking just about full grown. I also agree that beige are so pretty! I'd love to have one someday, but I guess NOW wasn't the time. ;)

Okay... I've decided after today that it's not a runny nose. It's DROOL. He rubs it around with his little hands, and that made it look like it was coming from his nose... but after watching his behavior for the past few weeks...I don't think he's sick. I just think he's having tooth problems.
He had lost his appetite...but it wasn't that he didn't want to eat, he would TRY. He'd cock his head to the side and drop the pellets often though; as if it were painful. Then I started him on the Critical Care and he LOVES it. He put his mouth right over the syringe and wants more! And he has always been drinking water just fine.
So after I fed him today, I peaked into his mouth. Looks like one of his bottom teeth is rotten or something. 1 tooth looks as it should...strong & tall & yellow/orange in color. But the tooth next to it is shorter and a dirty white color. I didn't look at his top teeth because he was getting squirmy & upset. But I did call the vet and arrange for a tooth check tomorrow at 6 pm! Hopefully they can repair the damage or whatever it is they do for bad teeth....and get him eating on his own again soon!!

I can't recommend a brand name, as I haven't used any drops except a prescription kind the vet gave me. BUT, his vet DID say "regular human drops" would be fine. I'd just read the packaging and see what's in it. Make sure i know what all the ingredient are, and that there are not a LOT of ingredients.
I can read on my drops I have at home and see if I'd recommend any of them - but maybe it would be better to call a vet and ask them for a brand!
I have chronic "blepheritus" myself, so I know what it feels like to have dry irritated eyes. I have several kinds of drops at home....but I fail to use them most of the time. I'll read though, and see what's in them and which ones I would use on my chin if I ran out of his prescription kind.

Well it's a different kind of sedation... to put them under "regular" would be a risk to the chin. The vet said they have a special gas stuff that doesn't fully knock them out, but relaxes them enough to look at the teeth - then as soon as they pull the gas away, the chin is fully awake. This is less risky. If we need to do more than 1 thing, I'd choose the tooth check and the x-ray. I'm not sure the bloodwork would show anything.....but I think a tooth check will probably reveal the problem and an x-ray could at least make sure his lungs ARE clear.
Still no call yet though....I may have to call them again....and again ask for the vet to return my call. Nothing like playing phone tag with the Doctor!

Talk to the vet... they wanted to do X-ray, blood work, and sedate him enough to look in his mouth (check teeth). I told them that's a lot of stress on a chinchilla and would prefer they choose ONE of these procedures (whichever seems the most beneficial based on his symptoms). They haven't gotten back to me yet, but they did give me some Oxbow Critical Care to force feed him. Poor little guy, he was mad at first, then before I knew it he was leaning toward the syringe...going for it...wanting more!
...which makes me think it's a tooth issue. He has been eating, just not much. (and he drinks water fine!) Maybe hard food is hurting him to eat, so he was all into this mush! But would teeth issues cause a runny nose? It's so weird. One doc thought he might have pneumonia, but I told her they listened to his chest on March 5th (last time we were at the vet) and said he sounded all clear.
Guess we'll see....in the meantime I'm feeding my lil guy through a syringe and he's cool with it.  ???

They get clogged the same as humans do.... from dry eyes, dust in the air and other irritants. The drops are basically fake tears...since the duct is clogged, it's not producing enough tears to clear out the irritants. So the drops wash out the eyes, and hopefully help clear the duct by washing away the irritants.
Sorry you're going through this.
If it makes you feel any better my Dewey is not better after 1 vet visit either.
He's gonna have to go back...
(still losing weight and having a runny nose).

What is CC? I do have a syringe...but not sure what I would put in it...besides pedialyte. His pellets are too hard to crush small enough to fit through the syringe.

He's STILL losing.
March 13th weight: 478 grams.  :::(((

yeah, I hope she went to a GOOD home. I feel like so many people out there buying chins are SO under-educated.
But I really don't need to be buying any more chins at this point any way...so it's probably for the better.

You can put a pan in his usual pee corner... he'll probably start using it on his own. This don't mean he'll ALWAYS pee in the pan, but keeping the pan clean will encourage it.

She's $150. . . .I don't know if they still have her...
...called Petsmart after posting this. She's been sold.

Hmm.... maybe she was closer to 6 months old then. Because she certainly looked bigger than any picture of kits I've seen.
Thanks for the info.
I am still so tempted to go get her. (Or at least go see if they still have her!) My husband is shaking his head at me though. She's just SOOOO cute!!! She's the first beige I've seen IRL. <3 <3

That's an antibiotic though, right? The vet said he doesn't have a bacterial infection, therefore he doesn't need antibiotics. Vet said he has a viral infection that just has to run it's course.

But it's taking awhile....he's still not eating well. And with his runny nose popping up randomly again, I'm not sure if he's getting over anything. Which is why my DH asked about allergies...? but I don't know. I've never had Dewey at this time of year (beginning of Spring). I got him in June of last year.... maybe I should email his previous owner and ask if he's ever had allergies in Spring time before...?

I posted this in my weight topic...but I'll post again here.
His runny nose came back today! My husband has pretty bad allergies this time of year, and suggested maybe Dewey has allergies too. Is it possible for chinchillas to get seasonal allergies?
