Nice to meet you ::wave::
Do share, we love pics . ::nod::

Thanks guys, but if it's a white ebony I can't breed it to a white. What about the lethal factor? Does that come in to play?

Yes one of those wait and sees LOL
I try to keep colors bright but this one seems almost charcoal, not a shiny ebony. Yes I'd go with a standard too I think. ;)
We both had light tans born last season and his is almost a dark tan now while mine stayed light to med. ::nod::

Is she a white ebony, ebony, or an ebony white  ;)
She a cutie, but what can we or can not breed her too is the question.

I am mentoring a gentlemen on breeding here in Newfoundland, and he has shipped in some nice animals. Some from the Jags lines.
He just had an extra dark ebony dame and an ebony white sire, { with some extreme black spots}deliver  an ebony kit with a white under coat.

Q & A / Re: sources for treats and toys?

here's a good spot to shop. ;)

The female also needs to be 8-12 months old, depending on when she passes the thumb test. You will have to wait to put them together.
Yes always the chance they won't get along.
Then if they have 2 kits you will need more cages to avoid the mom from breeding back to back and/or breeding with relatives. 4 kits per year and you soon end up with a basement full of cages. ::nod::

Get him a safe teddy bear, he's just rushed out in his new surroundings. He's just a baby so won't eat very much. Treats only take up space in his tiny belly that would be better fed with hay and pellets.
I don't feed anything other than a few flakes of oatmeal to any one under 6 months at least. That's more for bribes when weighing and things.
He'll come to you faster if you dip your hand in the dust bath.  ;) Tap on the container and he'll come running when he hears that sound.Offer him various hays over treats. They are very fond of alfalfa as a secondary hay, but there are others as well.
And time, there's no rush he'll be around for years. ::kiss99::

Q & A / Re: Second Chinchilla Issues
« on: April 06, 2013, 09:13:58 PM »
I always make new chins my pets before I introduce them to another chin. If they trust me, they'll trust I will not let another hurt them and will pull them out before any serious injuries are inflicted.
It's all about trust, so give her time to get to know you first. ::wub::
Emma doesn't want to share just yet, you also need to show her she wont loose you to this intruder.
Take it slow, love them both , then ask if they'd like to meet.
Remember they may never like each other, so a second set up is a must.

Thank you, no matter how long you have chins it always hurts to loose them.  ::cry222:::

Cages / Re: Petco cages

Just a few years back I was so chastised for using pine   but I still use it  and never had a problem. It's cheap, available any where and works great for chinchillas.

Yes watch for signs of infection. Is it opened? That poor baby. :::(((
I showed a female another's newborn one time and she grab hold of the forehead and tore a huge chunk out of the babies head. Just like being scalped. I couldn't believe she'd do that and thought for sure I had killed the poor thing. It healed up just fine. ::nod::

Q & A / Re: HELP please! Baby Chin that mom won't nurse
« on: April 01, 2013, 07:25:06 PM »
Check moms teats. They should be elongated and puffy in the surrounding tissue. If mom can not nurse they are both very confused right now.
I just had a kit a 3 months ago that it took the mom over 2 weeks to get any milk in.3 times a day I would hold a warm almost hot damp cloth to the mom teats and then manually try to express milk just like milking a cow. I gave her extra calcium and vit c.
I fed the kit 4-5 times per day letting mom look after him during the night. As her milk started to come in I weaned back to 3, then 2 then once a day with the hand feedings.
I will let mom have one more try, suspect she is already pregnant. If she has problems with the next litter I shall pull her from breeding.

and he will be fine with extra hay.  ::nod::

Well you need to wit till the female is 8-12 months old to put her with a male. You will get kits. ::phhhhhhth::

Your best bet is a young male, and even then they may not get along.
