Cages / Re: Help with my chin cage!!

I personally like martins cages.  You do not have to use the ramps and I just put my wooden shelves right on top of the wire shelves then add other ledges.  I like the drop in pans because they cant chew the pan and there is a solid bottom instead of wire mesh for the floor.

Breeding 101 / Re: Newbie and starting a herd, please some advice!
« on: October 02, 2011, 03:20:56 AM »
If you are interested in breeding you need to do research and more research.  Breeding chinchillas is not all about cute little kits.  Feedings every two hours round the clock for moms who don't get milk or pass away, dead kits, or other problems.  If you then decide to breed, yes you need to get good stock, go to a show, you can usually pick up animals there.  I would start out with more simple combinations like standards or whites or ebony before you get into the more recessive mutation colors.  Others will tell you the same thing.  All chins do not get along and fights can break out any time and you could wake up with one or more dead chins.

General Breeder Chat / Re: Can someoen identify the breed of my chins?

If you don't know the chins background I would not breed them.  How do you know the father didn't have tooth issues or some other problem that would breed into the kits.  That is why breeders work so hard to improve the breed and keep pedigrees.  Reputable breeders pull chins with problems or ones that aren't up to standard.  Please do you research before breeding, it isn't all cute babies and fun.

They appear to be lighter standard grey from pictures.

General Chat / Re: Chin on his back

Chins sleep in odd positions, being on his back would mean he feels comfortable, so that is a good sign for me.

Can I ask why you think they need "slimmed down"?  Chinchillas generally do not over eat.  A good diet of hay and pellets is all they need.  Cut out the treats if you think they are too big, but some chins are just larger than others.  I have a small male that is only 495 grams and a female that is over 800 grams.

When you get new chinchillas, they should be quarentined from other chinchillas that you already have in case they are sick.  Are you letting them all out at playtime?  if so your chin may be scared of the new ones or may have caught something from them or may just be nervous.  Time will tell but be watchfull of poos and if they are eating and drinking.  If anything is off I would suggest a vet visit.

Goats milk, will have to be fed every 2 hours round the clock.  That is a major weight loss, hope you can save him.

Q & A / Re: Question about kits.
« on: September 12, 2011, 12:47:38 PM »
Hay and pellets should be free fed, chinchillas do not gorge themselves.  Males should be seperated from mom by 8 weeks.  I usually ween at 8 weeks and when they are at least 200 grams. They are weened abruptly and put in their own cage.

Health / Re: Just want to make sure about there fur...
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:25:04 AM »
If your female is a few chewer, it is not a good idea to be breeding these chins as fur chewing can be genetic, also you don't know what other underlying conditions could be going on that you are breeding into these kits.  I would suggest seperating your male and from the female.

Maybe a split is common in whiskers, but I have only seen one of mine that way and that is if she chews them.

Q & A / Re: Help! Chin had Babies!
« on: July 29, 2011, 10:55:49 AM »
First, kits can range in starting weights especially with triplets.  As long as they are maintaining or gaining weight that is good.  After a few days they should start gaining a few grams a day.  Kits will start eating on hay and pellets just after a few days but need mothers milk as main thing.

As long as the kit is gaining you do not need to supplement, but you can use goats milk.  Fresh can be found at Walmart, I believe.

You can ween kits around 8 weeks but they should be around 200 grams or higher.  Also should maintain weight after weening or may need additional time with mama.

Dust baths after 10 days.

Father should not be housed with mother if you don't plan to breed, and loosing kits are only one of the hard things that come with breeding chins.  Father cannot be housed with mother and kits for a couple reasons other than breeding the mother, if your kit is female she could get pregnant at a young age and die from delivery from being too smalll, and if you have a male kit they can fight to the death over the mother when she comes into heat.

If you would like to keep the kit it can be housed with either the mother of father depending on its sex.  But either way unless you are breeding you will need another cage.

Good luck with your kit.
