Health / Chinchilla bedding
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:43:33 PM »
I thought I would get some opinions from the many experts on here. I always use pine shavings for my 5 chins...We have a shredder her at work and as i was emptying the bag...I wondered if that was safe to use with the pine bedding. It is in such tiny pieces..I wouldn't think that would hurt them but would it??  ::shrug::

I need some thought on this subject and I probably already know what will be said..Don't change a good thing that I have had absolutley NO problems with at all??!!

Thank you!  ::silly::

The last chinchilla I bought..He is a male Black Velvet named Kingston..When I purchased him from a very nice breeder, he had warned me that he was a furr-chewer and ,therefore, was not 'Breedable" as it can be genetic. I had no intentions of breeding (I have 5 chins) but I wanted him because I fell in love with his sweet face..and was hoping I could help him overcome his bad habit. He has been with us for over a year...all of his furr has come back plush and gorgeous..he has not chewed one piece of furr since he has been with me. His cage is full...full of every toy you can imagine, huts, hammocks, foot toys...spoiled rotten! I have been lucky thus far but he is happy and very loving...I used to be a nail biter so him and I..WE Have OVERCOME!  :2funny: ::silly::

I have found that keeping him amused, occupied, happy and loved have done the job!

Hmmm...have a black velvet male who is just as laid back, sweet and lazy as can be. Now my two females..one is a standard gray and the other a mosaic...they are like living in a chin college dorm..wild and crazy as hell...party girls. Bella Luna, the mosaic female....I must say has the attitude! She is bit snooty at times and definitely has her own agenda....love them all...each is so individualistic!  :2funny: ::silly::

Q & A / Re: Female Chinchillas has been very moody
« on: October 28, 2011, 09:13:24 AM »
WOW! I can say that I have never had this problem (thank goodness) but I could understand where this could be quite annnoying.

Keep us updated on her progress with her new owner if you can...as it sounds like you have let her go. I
would be interested in seeing how she is with someone new and if the new owner can change her TAZ ways...wow what a little brat!

My girls are different in many ways from the boys...they are much wilder and definitely more agile than the boys...I call their cage the Phi-Beta-Chin sorority chin house..these two party all evening!

LOL... ::silly:: ;D

I purchased my first two males from PetSmart because I could not stand to see them in that Plexiglass...they have been in perfect health..I have had no problems with them at all. My two females I found on hoobly.com and drove 6 hours to pick them up and they were well worth it. No health problems, were well taken care of by a 17 year old who just didn't realize the work and time they need (and they were keeping him up all night  ::nod::) My 5th chinnie I bought from a breeder and he had a furr chewing problem...he is in great health and has not chewed any fur since he has been with me. I have been fortunate and I believe if you look around you will find what you are looking for. I try not to have a negative outlook because if you do not take chances, then you will never know what you may be missing! Good Luck on your search...there is some sweet little furr ball out there waiting to go home!  ;)

General Chat / Finally...a loving breakthrough with Gizmo
« on: September 23, 2011, 01:42:00 PM »
First, I would just like to say that this site is great..all of the people who truly love their animals and have rescued some from such neglectful situations. It is so sad to hear and see people who abuse animals as there is no excuse for it but thank goodness for the lucky little furry souls who end up in loving homes. Kudos to all you "rescue" Moms and Dads out there.

Anyway, just love to share a happy or cute story once in a while. My Gizmo, a TOV Tan male, and one of 5 chins I have...well he is probably the most "stand offish" of all 5 chins....been the hardest to get to a really trusting point with me. Last evening, I went into the chinny haven for treat time and Gizmo came right up to me and put his paw in my hand (it was like we were holding hands  :blush2: :)...AWWW..I melted..the cute little furry butt...He loves me!!! (and/or he was sucking up as he was well aware there was a goji berry or raisin coming in the next few seconds!!  :2funny:)  I choose to believe the first reason!  ::silly:: ;D

Q & A / Re: Peeing on seagrass mats.
« on: September 23, 2011, 10:17:33 AM »
They are all so different..I love the seagrass mats...Bella and Lucy, the girls,  completely and precisely dismantle them until there is nothing left. Roo and Gizmo, the boys, do the same and toss them around for play. Kingston,  male, does not do a thing with them except for repeatedly pee on them as if they are a litter box and I throw them out. Little buggers!  ;D ::silly::
