General Chat / Chinchilla going through stress?
« on: July 28, 2016, 09:30:20 PM »
Hello everybody at the chinchilla club its been a very long while that i havent came on this forum. But i have a very important question that i need solved. So for the majority of the time all 3 chinchillas were living at my dads house with a terrible air conditioner. Eventually i got a new one for my moms house so i can bring them over and give them better attention than going back and forth to my dads house and having my dad check up on them before leaving work. Long story short they are now living with me and seem to be stressed? One of my boys doesnt seem to care. The other seems about fine but when i carry him he is in freeze mode and as soon as i open his cage door he wants to jump off asap like he is scared or something. The baby seems kinda the same. Everyone is eating fine drinking water fine, pooping fine. So in that area i have no concerns also i havent ordered any chew toys so i know im due for that this coming tuesday which excited for since a couple stores have new chew toys and such. But what should i do in terms of them having stress? Should i leave the room to them alone more or should i do somehing else? I also keep them in a room with sugar gliders too but they have done well with them at my dads house. I will really appriciate the help asap so i know what things to do thank you!

Health / Bleeding foot pad
« on: February 10, 2016, 12:36:56 AM »
Hi everyone i havent been on for quite sometime as the chins have been doing good but today i notice chachis foot had a bit of blood. Then i also noticed him either grooming the area or possibly picking at it. I did clean the blood off with some water and cleaned the wound with a little peroxide and some bag balm to keep it from cracking or getting any other bacteria. My mom did say if it bleeds again or looks infected we will take him to the vet on friday since we do have a memorial tomorrow and thursday for my grandma that passed away last year. But as of now my dad is going to check up on him through out the night. I dont know if it could be possible bubble foot? The foot pad looked a little red it wasnt warm or hot to the touch. His other foot pad looks good so that one im not to worried about. He does have a habit of sitting on his pee even after rearraging there huts he still will go sit by the pee or go find another spot and pee and sit there. I am planning to switch there plastic pans to stainless bass pans so i can avoid all plastic so their pee wont soak up on the plastic or anything.

General Chat / Dont know what to do its going to get hot!
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:26:09 PM »
So my biggest fear was that temperatures were going to rise higher then the mid 80s in los angeles. For the next 2 days its going to go up to the 90s and my portable air conditioner has been running non stop for the past week. All i have been doing is cleaning, feeding the chinchillas and the cage because with my body heat and the light in the room they are in, temperatures go up to 75. Without me in there or a light on it drops to 73. My other rooms in the house get A Lot more sunlight then my room im just nervous about tomorrow and the day after because its going to be 90 degrees. It drops back in the low 70s by monday.... I hate this

edit: i have cleaned the filter to my portable A/C i dont know what else to keep the room more cooler then it is.

Cages / Revamping & restoring all items in the chins cages soon!
« on: August 10, 2015, 02:14:31 AM »
Really soon i will be restoring all of the chins items since its been more then a year they have had there wood shelfs and stuff and i should be getting some new fleece in too. Plus im adding a 3rd level to the cage to give the 2 big boys more room. I am considering in getting chico his own cage depending if he is able to handle jumping from level to level since he is a small chinchilla from the 2 i have. Changing the subject a bit i wanted to know if i was to order or make a 36" shelf for my chins would it fit into place or not? I see a lot of people with the long planks across the back part of there ferret nations or critter nations and im worried if i order or make the wrong dimensions ill just be screwed lol.

P.S. Chicos level is seperated off from chachis and chonchis level so they dont share both levels

Its been awhile since ive been on here but one of my chins (chonchi) the chinchilla that loves to nip and get into trouble A LOT! Has developed a habit of jumping off of me or out of my hands into the cage. I have had some scares but thank god from the times he does this he has never been hurt or jumped into anything to hurt himself. But this habit was an out of nowhere thing. I had to put him away since there playtime was over and for the 3rd time allowed me to pick him up without him jumping and running off. So after i picked him up i held him all the way to the cage and a couple seconds after opening it he suddenly had this jolt from his tail all the way to the front of him and run and jump he goes! Into the cage! And i got scared thinking something scared him but no the only noises going on in my room was the A/C and my brother vacuuming the room next door. (The chins are use to the vacuum already so there not  scared of it) the bond between him and i is no different everything has been the same since but its these out of nowhere times he Jolts off of me into the cage and theres been a couple times where he slipped off my shoulder or my hands and i had to catch him out of being frightened he would hit his head and break out having seizures or he would break a leg or hand. Thank god none of that has happened but i just want to know why he does this and if anyone else has a chin that does this. Lol ita pretty frightening

General Chat / Introduction Problems
« on: April 07, 2015, 12:55:45 AM »
Now that my chins are back to normal health i wanted all 3 to start there bonding, well all that happened was the smaller one (chico) kepts chasing one of my older chins (chonchi) my other chin (chachi) doesnt mind him unless chico picks at him which was whatever between them the smell each other but dont really care that there both there. But there was alot of chasing and some mounting and some fur slips. It looks a bit better then when i first tried introducing all 3  since they actually tried fighting. This time there were no signs of fighting but alot of chasing, mounting and plopping everywhere. I really would like them to get along, if its not possible would you suggest me getting chicos other siblings? The breeder i got him from still has his siblings, he said he would give me one of the parents since there a retired breeding pair but i also suggested a sibing better, chico and his brothers and only sister where sharing a cage total of 3 boys including and the sister. I really would not want them hating each other since chico does look sad alone in his cage, i am not going to consider surrendering him or giving him away since chico doesnt get along with my other chins.

Health / Dry feet?
« on: March 13, 2015, 03:12:56 PM »
I noticed one of my chins feet were cracked and little bit red and idk if he picks at his feet but there was a small scab on his right foot pad i did look for swelling but i cant tell if there swollen or not. I did rub some bag balm a couple days ago. What should i do? Chin probs after another. Im leaving school right now since im kinda worried for him to check again. There was a couple of times that his feet would crack and bleed but that stopped after i started cleaning twice a day instead lf once a day.

Health / baby chinchilla has eye boogers
« on: February 26, 2015, 12:22:55 AM »
the first day I brought him home he had no eye boogers, but the first time he got a dust bath I noticed after he has had constant eye boogers. he eats his pellet food like a chinchilla should, he chews on toys well so I don't think theres no malo, he doesn't drool from his mouth its just those eye boogers. my 2 other chins eyes that don't have eye boogers look exactly the same as chico's but chico has the eye boogers. I don't know what to do and the vet office I go that sees chinchillas wont be open again after construction is done  :( and the vet doesn't come to peoples houses anymore so idk what to think, he also does eat hay and drink water so nothing wrong there, his teeth aren't long. could it be the dust? and the dust that flys in his cage irritating his eyes? I felt for bumps on his jaw line and check bones and felt nothing ,which I heard from a homeopathic exotic animal doctor by my aunts house in Tarzana but she told me if you feel nothing then the teeth and molar should be ok. so idk what to think now. theres no wetness around his eyes just the eye boogers

General Chat / Got my new chin but need help with introducing
« on: February 07, 2015, 08:57:57 PM »
About a couple of hours ago i got my 8 month old chin. Hes very small and supee friendly. Even with the car ride all he wanted was the carrier to be open lol, the guy i got him from worked in schools and would take all 3 siblings with him sometimes so the kids can see so i think thats the reason why hes not scared at all. Well when i got home i wanted to see how he reacted in the new environment and he seemed ok but when he seen my 2 chinchillas he ran to the cage and tried to jump up to see them. And i took both my boys out and the new baby into the restroom and all 3 were investigating each other. There was no fur biting, no fighting but one of my chins kept smelling him and looked like he tried to mount him. I was worried but as i got closer i did reassure that thats what he was doing. So since i have $40 saves up for another cage for the new chinchilla if he isnt accepted with my 2 other boys i had all 4 doors opened from the 2 boys cage and they didnt seemed to mind but kept smelling him. (the cage wasnt cleaned yet or disinfected) but my chin chachi started to chase him and started grunting but like a grunt when he first fought with my other chin chonchi so i separated the 2 levels from the ferret nation and put a tile covering the hole so they dont bounce up or down. So i later when my brother comes im going to have him in the rest room with all 3 boys and while hes doing that im going to disinfect my cage and wash all the fleece i have and im sanding the surfaces of my ledges. I currently dont have bleach but i do have lysol disinfectant spray idk if that works isntead of bleach and were getting alot of rain in my area possibly floods which is odd and a first time thing in my area so. Im hoping lysol works and if not can you guys recommend an alternative

General Chat / Chinchilla breeders in Southern California?
« on: January 24, 2015, 06:35:48 PM »
Ive been looking for a Breeder, Rescue to Pick up another Chin for the Family. But i Have no luck! Ive tried rhe San Diego Humane Society that rescued about 400 chins and they have none. I dont know where to look. I dont Trust Craigslist or Kijiji. I dont want to go to Petco near me since the lady that knew and had chins herself transfered to another petco. And the petsmarts treat there animals like a door mat. If anyone lives in the southern area of california and knows of breeders around the area please let me know thank you

General Chat / Something that is hard to believe
« on: November 19, 2014, 02:50:21 AM »
Its going to be a month that i have my puppies and they ran in my room today which i thought would be a good idea since there still babies to introduce to my chins. I thought one or the other would react in a bad way and both smelled each other with no signs of stress or anger towards each other. Now that i think that my friend is planning on giving me her 8 month old ferret for me to keep. Yes ik thats not a good idea for a ferret and chinchilla to interact since ferrets are predatory animals. My idea is to house them in the same room BUT when the chinchillas are going to have play time have the ferret in my dads room then when playtime is over put chins away and then bring in ferret. I have looked over my room for ways the ferret could possibly get to the chin and as from what i see theres no possible way but still dont wanna take a risk so im thinking of putting a thin blanket over the chins cage. I have spoken to my dad about it and we dont have no more room in another room since my dad, my grandfather, and the guest room is accupied already so thats a boo boo for me now. But im still finding ways to ferret proof my room before xmas. BTW i dont know if you guys remember i had put a post about how my chins didnt like hay well i ordered from Kmshayloft and they eat more then before. I get 3rd cut timothy hay and they both munch on it when they want. I do stick more then a handsfull of hay so they have extra to play with or to...well like always pee on it lol so yea thats a case closed now just my number one worry is the proofing of my room.maybe ill buy a play pen thing and barricade around the chins cage.

General Chat / My chinchillas dislike there Hay...
« on: October 19, 2014, 10:21:28 PM »
Ever since i got my chinchillas within the first 3 weeks i started seeing they were Picky Eaters. Out of nowhere recently they started losing interest in the Oxbow Timothy Hay. I do keep it in a plastic container so it lasts longer (with holes for ventilation). So i was flipping through some blogs and other chinchilla forums and i seen some peopl going through the same thing and switchng to Orchard Grass or going to Kleenmamas Hayloft. Ohh before i finish they do love there Alfalfa/Oat Hay Cubs Tremedously within 2 Days of feeding them that the cube is gone... And i do hear alfalfa should be fed sparingly. So what do you suggest a different hay other then timothy? Or Better Hay Quality with kleenmamas? And i heard if they started off with tooth problems they would stop eating completely and they would Start to drool. There is no signs of that. There Super Hyper and active chewing on there toys so i know theres no tooth problem there.

Health / chinchilla soft stool again
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:17:46 PM »
i noticed this last night i had fed them there pellet food (oxbow pellets) a few hours after i went to check up on them because they kept bouncing around. but i noticed a soft stool so i picked it up and had a slight odor to them. so what went through my mind was take away the pellets and give them more hay, so i did and went to check on both of them today in the morning and there was a slight change. no more odor but some what still soft. so idk if it has to do with the pellets or not but if it is im planning on switching. this weekend too im also planning on cleaning the full cage its self with water and vinegar to kill off any bacteria. i hope it changes but the end of the week. my aunt reffered a homepathic medication she gave her 3 chins that caught a stomach bug called kocci free and cleared up in 10 days. she had gave all 3 flagyl but never worked it got even worse. so she said if it doesnt clear up by saturday shes giving me that. also i am calling the nearest vet friday just in case it still persist to see what he has in mind and what he thinks it is, since all though i cant self diagnose him.
