Web site Reviews / Re: found the coolest web site on chin colorings!
« on: June 23, 2008, 12:42:25 PM »
Your are right--it is a neat site to go to & play with putting different colors in to see what the results will be (maybe). From my understanding, it is fairly accurate, but we all know that our chinnies are full of surprises.  There may be a hidden genetic somewhere that will totally fool you.  rofl  Another site that I like just to see mutations with good descriptions is

General Chat / Pumice stone versus lava rock
« on: June 23, 2008, 12:32:19 PM »
Does anyone know if it is definitely pumice that chins need to chew on?  I know what the safe & unsafe woods are for them.  What is the difference between pumice stone & lava rock?  I am hearing that you can purchase bags of white decorative stone/lava rock at your building supply store & as long as you wash it, it is ok to let your chins chew away.  Just want to check first. Don't want them to have anything they shouldn't.  It would make sense that a large bag would be cheaper & you wouldn't have any shipping charges.   Thanks--~JANE*

Breeding 101 / Re: male and how many females?
« on: June 22, 2008, 10:14:39 AM »
Do you mean that you want to put a male in with females that are all in the same cage together?   Or do you mean the females all have their own separate cages in a run & you want to know if it is ok to let the male go in with each one separately when he chooses?    ~JANE*

I, myself, have had no more than 3 in a litter.  I think 2 is the perfect number.....that's a good thing for the momma, too.  There are more than 3 born more often than we think.  I have read lots of stories about 3 or 4 in a litter.  In fact, there is a picture of a momma & her 6 babies on Shoots chinchilla ranch (I think it's that one) & it states that she raised them all my herself!!  What a super mom!!!...I would actually probably not breed her again for fear of loosing her. Or at least not breed her with the same Sire.  Does anybody know if the Sire or the Dam determines the number in a litter or neither--it just happens??   I wouldn't want one of my mommas put in that situation if I could research it & prevent it.     ~JANE*    ::nod::

Q & A / Re: pee pee on chins
« on: June 20, 2008, 11:17:18 AM »
He wasn't dirty until I put him in with a female...I guess I'll just have to figure it out.  Have you tried baby wipes yourself?  Did urine show on the cloth?  If so, what kind did you use.  Maybe it's the brand I'm using.          Thanks-- ~JANE*

Other Pets / Re: I'm So Sad
« on: June 20, 2008, 11:09:41 AM »
I hope you find your cat...you must be so hurt.  Did he/she have an ID tag on?  Check with the animal control.  By some luck, someone may have turned him in.  Let us know if he is found. At least the weather is warmer right now.  How long have you had him?
                          Good luck--~JANE*

Q & A / Re: pee pee on chins
« on: June 18, 2008, 11:58:08 AM »
Does anyone else have any suggestions?  I tried the baby wipes & nothing came off.  I know it is urine on him.  The baby wipes really made sense to clean him. Timothy was such a pretty violet. He feels so tacky, if you know what I mean.  His belly was so white.   I still love him, but he is such a mess!!  HELP
By the way, does anyone else have this problem?     ~JANE*

General Breeder Chat / Re: Does Your Chin????
« on: June 18, 2008, 07:54:40 AM »
My pregnant chins don't do a whole lot of stretching. I am home all day & they are housed in my house, so I would notice it. I get to play with them all day  ::silly:: The only chin I ever noticed doing an incredible amount of stretching  was one that had an intestinal blockage one time.  Yeh, she was trying to move that blockage down & out!  She succeeded, too, and now she is fine. But, I did forget to mention that the water intake does increase incredibly.    ~JANE*

::chinhappy:: The only thing I have noticed is my females  really look for their grain supplement. They get a dried papaya in the evening, but they really want the grain.  It's like they know it is good for them & their babies. They lie down lots, too, even if it is not close to delivery time.  Mine always let me handle them.  I guess because I handle them so much.  No two chinnies are alike, though.   ~JANE*

Thanks--I'll have to try that.  I really didn't think about using anything wet for cleaning associated with chins.    ~JANE*

Q & A / pee pee on chins
« on: June 14, 2008, 09:21:17 AM »
Hi--What do you think is a good way to get rid of pee on a chin?  You can see it on the lighter colored ones. The fur looks all separated
on any color & you can feel it's tackiness when you hold them.  Mine get regular dust baths which I understand takes out excess lanolin & cleans them, but it doesn't seem to take that pee look & feel away.  Is that something that just has to wear off?  Especially the ones that are caged together for mating. Is there something else I can do?

Q & A / grain supplement ingredients
« on: June 12, 2008, 12:12:23 PM »
Can anyone tell me what is in the grain supplement for the chinchillas?   Are there different grains from different places?  Do they all have about the same ingredients?  Also, do most chin owners add crushed rosehips?  Is it really necessary?  It probably has a lot of vitamins in it for them.  Right now I order mine from lonestar chnchillas.  I guess Chuck could tell me what's in his.

Q & A / Couple of questions on tans........
« on: June 11, 2008, 06:41:56 PM »
Hi--Can anyone tell me what color eyes a true tan would have?  Also, does their fur coloring get lighter or darker with age or does it stay the same?
                                     Thanks

Conformation and Quality / Re: Show chinchillas
« on: June 11, 2008, 06:13:37 PM »
That's great!!  I didn't know that show chins do not need a pedigree either. There are some really nice looking chins out there that do not have a pedigree.  Of course, we all know if you don't know the history, you really shouldn't breed them, but it's ok to show them?  Is that right?   I'm confusing myself......... ::)

Cages / Disposable pads for cages??
« on: June 11, 2008, 05:53:45 PM »
I would like to know if anyone has ever used those disposable pads in their chins cages?  You know kind of like the blue ones they use in the hospital.  You can buy them in pet stores & everywhere.  I don't mean in the actual cage itself, but in the tray underneath.  I have pull out pans on my cages.  Then, of course, I would put pine
shavings on top of it.  I think it would keep the tray very dry & not
stick like newspaper does.  Cleanup would be so easy. I was reading the package because I am concerned with any scent & such that might be harmful to them.  All it said is that there is baking soda in the pad.  Baking soda doesn't have a scent that I can smell.  Is it ok for the chinnies?  What are your opinions on using these  pads?
