General Chat / Tradition feed needed asap!!
« on: March 24, 2012, 12:49:25 PM »
Hi...Someone I know with a chin lives in the Nashville, Tn. area & are needing Tradition pellets NOW.  Long story short they ran out & their chin is not eating the Oxbow they purchased to try to hold over till they got some from me.  They are responsible pet owners & it was just a freak thing that they ran out.  Does anyone know anybody who might have some?  I do, but I'm a little over an hour away.   thanks :::(((

General Chat / chocolate or extra dark tan??
« on: June 09, 2011, 01:14:08 PM »
What do you go by when you are trying to determine if a chinchilla is a dark or extra dark tan or chocolate?  I have heard that the hair follicle must be really dark brown right down to the skin, but I have also heard that the skin should be tan too.  What do I look for in making my determination?  The  Dam is a het. beige & the Sire an dark/extra dark white ebony.  thanks

General Breeder Chat / Chocolate or Extra dark tan
« on: February 02, 2010, 09:11:57 PM »
::shrug:: Can anyone tell me the best way for me to decide if I have a chocolate or extra dark tan chin?  I had babies about a week ago.  There were 2 in the litter.....males.  One is dark ebony.  The other...not positive as to whether he is an extra dark tan or chocolate.   The father was sold to me by a breeder who had stated dark tan or extra dark tan  ?chocolate on the pedigree.  Momma is an extra dark tan.  I have heard that the dark coloring of the fur should go all the way down to the skin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.    Thanks   ~JANE~

General Chat / White-tipped tail on Mosaic??
« on: June 27, 2009, 04:40:07 PM »
Well, maybe someone on here can help me with this question.  I have been trying to find out if anyone knows if a mosaic chin always has a white-tipped tail??  I have a litter of 3.  The Mom is a mosaic & the father is a standard gray.  One kit is gray, one kit is definitely a mosaic & the other one is a mystery.  All I can say is she looks "splotchy" colors of white & gray.  Maybe she's a light gray?  I have posted some pictures, but they could be better.  Even if they were, it's really hard to tell what she is.  I sent an e-mail to Shoots to see if they could help me.  They say the only stupid questions are the ones unasked. I may just have to wait until she gets bigger. I was going to post a picture, but it is too large....may resize & post later.   Thanks for your help.    ~JANE~   :-\

General Chat / Pesty small flies..YUCK!!
« on: May 16, 2009, 09:09:12 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with those small pesty flies?  I clean my cages regularly (bedding & washing of cages).  I have a pest control company come every 3 months & treat my home with animal friendly sprays.  My daughter has chins at her home also & she is having the same problem despite regular cleaning.  The company said the only other thing they know to try is spraying with "pyrithic" which could be harmful to the chins.  The chins would need to be removed from the area to be treated but could be brought back in later after everything dries.  They have this problem at restaurants, buffets in particular.  After closing time all the food is removed & they go in & spray.  Sometimes it takes 3 attempts to get rid of them.  Anybody out there ever experience this problem.....it really is starting to irritate me.  I have a newborn baby in my house ( I just became a GREAT Grandma   ::nod:: & I want them gone!!!  I will make sure the baby is not in the house either when they spray.      Thanks

General Chat / Safe/Unsafe Wood
« on: April 24, 2009, 09:39:38 AM »
Hello everyone....have a question on woods. I  have been doing some research on "Scaley Bark Hickory".  We had a tree go down in a wind storm in our yard.  Does anyone know if that is a safe wood for our chinnies?  I have found large lists in my research, but don't see that one listed under safe or unsafe.  I don't know what else it would be called.  Hickory is a common name.  ::shrug::

I was wondering if it's just me or is anyone else having problems with the new free e-mail on the club?  I use to use it  a LOT, but it won't forward & all I see is a bunch of jiberisch for a message & am unable to view attachments even after Jamie told me what I should do to be able to view them.  Just isn't working.!!   Is it still being worked on?   I am going to have to do something  SOON or I'll be getting behind in my work.       ::tickedoff::   Thanks  ~JANE~

Health / leakage from penis
« on: December 02, 2008, 02:05:36 PM »
I have a question on my baby male.  He is now 11 wks.
old.  Seems like from day one he may have had this problem, but now it is more noticeable.  Even when first born , he had a "dirty belly"  (not the coloring).  As he got a little older & his penis got a little larger, I noticed he had small droplets coming out of his penis, clear in color.  Guess it must be urine.  He is fine otherwise.  Eats very well, gained weight well, is very active, poops lots, (of course).  He has been to the exotic vet we use (whom I highly recommend) a couple of times.  He also has been on courses of 2 different antibiotics as a precautionary measure. He continues to do well.  He was in a litter of 3, all doing very well.  The vet said to wait a bit to see if it stops.  I'm always taking baby wipes to wipe him clean.  Has anyone ever heard of this before........thanks--JANE   ::shrug::

Health / serious penis problem!!
« on: August 05, 2008, 08:44:58 PM »
I want to ask you all if you have ever heard of this type of probelm. I have a male chin that is 6 months old.  I noticed that his penis was very swollen & would not stay in the sheath.  The tip was also very discolored.  You are probably thinking "hair ring".  That is not the problem. We could not find a hair ring. His penis was also very
dry. The lower part of his abdomen also seemed distended, but may only have been that his testicles just hadn't dropped yet.  We took him to the vet.  He asked that we leave him for a few hours so that he could give him some anesthesia & get a closer look & flush him out.  Yes, he is an EXOTIC vet.  A very good one, in fact.  They called me & told me I could pick him up.  When I got there, the vet informed me that he never did see a hair ring even looking with his special equipment as well as the naked eye. He proceeded to flush out the base of the penis sack & when he did hair, dry skin & all sorts of stuff came pouring out.  No, hair was wrapped around it, though.  The swelling went down & it did go back up into the sheath.  It only looked real good for a day.  He told me to bring him back if needed & I will do that tomorrow.  The tip is now very discolored, shriveling up & will not stay in the sheath again.  I fear he may loose the tip at least.  Is anyone familiar with this?  Please respond to me.

Board Requests & questions / picture size for website??
« on: July 27, 2008, 12:51:55 PM »
Hi everyone--I haven't worked on my website for quite some time & I'm trying to get back to it.  ::nod::   As far as images, does anyone know what the maximum size is for a picture that you want to upload to the website?  I have the free website with the chin club.  I am not sure if the size is my problem or I am not entering the correct wording in the image area after selecting the image link.  Thanks for any help you may be able to offer. I notice at the bottom of this forum it says 128 KB per post, but is that the same for the website?

General Chat / Pumice stone versus lava rock
« on: June 23, 2008, 12:32:19 PM »
Does anyone know if it is definitely pumice that chins need to chew on?  I know what the safe & unsafe woods are for them.  What is the difference between pumice stone & lava rock?  I am hearing that you can purchase bags of white decorative stone/lava rock at your building supply store & as long as you wash it, it is ok to let your chins chew away.  Just want to check first. Don't want them to have anything they shouldn't.  It would make sense that a large bag would be cheaper & you wouldn't have any shipping charges.   Thanks--~JANE*

Q & A / pee pee on chins
« on: June 14, 2008, 09:21:17 AM »
Hi--What do you think is a good way to get rid of pee on a chin?  You can see it on the lighter colored ones. The fur looks all separated
on any color & you can feel it's tackiness when you hold them.  Mine get regular dust baths which I understand takes out excess lanolin & cleans them, but it doesn't seem to take that pee look & feel away.  Is that something that just has to wear off?  Especially the ones that are caged together for mating. Is there something else I can do?

Q & A / grain supplement ingredients
« on: June 12, 2008, 12:12:23 PM »
Can anyone tell me what is in the grain supplement for the chinchillas?   Are there different grains from different places?  Do they all have about the same ingredients?  Also, do most chin owners add crushed rosehips?  Is it really necessary?  It probably has a lot of vitamins in it for them.  Right now I order mine from lonestar chnchillas.  I guess Chuck could tell me what's in his.
