Health / My Male was attacked by his mate, need advice!
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:55:25 AM »
Hey everyone,

I am having great difficulty finding a Vet here that does chinchilla care.  2 nights ago, my male was attacked by his mate.  I don't know if she went into heat or what but she chewed up his ear pretty good and there is a small cut above his eye.  I had an antibiotic ointment that I used when she did this a couple of years ago that I got from my vet in Denver but that is long gone.  Is there an over the counter ointment that is safe?

Thanks for the advice!

Steven

General Breeder Chat / Re: birth imminent - i think!

Yep, leave her alone as she knows what to do.  They will usually give birth when it's quiet and nothing going on.  Usually once the contractions get closer and closer, they will make a "squeak".

The white has black eyes and is a total spitfire!  We named her Shelby.  One beige has a white "mowhawk" on her tail.  The other beige has a very silky and smooth coat.  They are very sweet and doing great!  Send me a message if you are interested.  Adoption fee is negotiable!

General Chat / Re: Moving with Chinchilla
« on: May 19, 2010, 10:28:46 AM »
We moved from Denver, CO to Charlotte, NC.  We had Mom, Dad, and 3 two day old babies traveling with us.  We got a cage that almost looked like a rabbit cage, all wire.  It had no levels or anything.  We put them in the middle of the seat with a towel covering all sides but the one facing us to keep the sun off them.  We made very sure to have it nice and cool in the car!!  They did not even care as to what was going on and they all did fine.

Shipping:  Hmmm, I would not do it!  There is no guarantee of climate control.  I shipped one of my cats once and they lost her for almost 2 days!  Come to find out, she had actually been shipped to Europe and was left on the tarmack for more than 12 hours!!!  She came home dehydrated but did ok.  Chinchilla's are way to sensative to something like that happening to them.  Best wishes!!!

You know your babies best.  If you sincerely feel based on your experience with them that all is fine, go for it but watch him very carefully to see if there is a change.  If there is, he may need more time.  You will always be the best judge!  Best wishes!!

Here lies the problem:  Chinchilla's are VERY smart.  Once they figure out something, they will be extremely persistant in doing it again.  They do not give up very easily.  I can switch back to something I did like a year ago and in seconds, it's done and over with.  Example:  I put my babies in the hall with a baby gate covered with a towel so they could play there and try to figure out the whole bath thing.  I put Mom in so she could show them what to do and as soon as she finished her bath, zoom!  Right over the baby gate she went!  It had been atleast 8 months since she has seen this gate yet she remembered.  So, you are most likely fighting a never ending battle.  The only time mine hang around and don't get into trouble is if I lay on the floor with them so they can climb all over me and use me as a diving board!  Best of luck!!

Health / Re: Dead babies in female's first litter
« on: May 19, 2010, 10:13:51 AM »
Bless your heart!  It could be a case of any of the above answers or it could have been a bad pregnancy.  It sounds like she tried to have a large litter her first go round.  Any time I have had 4 in a litter, as least one of them died during birth or shortly after.  You don't have to remove Dad right away after breeding.  Just be mindful of the 111 day gestation period and make arrangements to move him to an adjacent cage near the end.  Make sure they can still see and sniff each other but not close enough to, well, you know.  She will go back into heat right away after giving birth.  Hopefully, she is not pregnant already as a break should be given.  I know it's hard but if you have your heart set on babies, I may give it one more try and if it's bad again, seriously consider not breeding anymore.  Best wishes to you!  Babies are great and I know the draw to having them!

I finally came up with names for the girls:  Shelby, Alba, and Brinkley.  They tried to take their first bath yesterday.  They were interested but wasn't quite sure what to do yet!  Soooo cute!

Ok, so I copied the ingredients and gotta ask, what is "Animax"?  When I google it it comes up as an ear medication.....

I've had the saucer and my chins hated it.  For one, they are very light and flip pretty easily.  I would highly recommend a 100% stainless steel wheel that has no "bar" on the inside of the wheel as it can hurt their backs.  You can usually find them on Ebay but won't find them in stores.  Beware of play pens too.  Chinchilla's are quite the little climbers!  Little smartypants!
