The good thing is that coccidia is fairly specific to the species of animal that has it. Giardia on the other hand can infect you and other pets so be careful until you can get a diagnosis. Both are common chinchilla ailments.

I have also heard Giaridia is harder to take care of, also the vet said its minor if it was bad to were immediate attention was needed was signs of not eating, playing, mucus or watery poop. But he said its soft which is minor.

Recommend you take some samples of the stool and send it to the vet.

This is also one of the reasons not to get lots of other pets in addition to chinchillas... chins are semi-fragile creatures, and if money is tight, it's probably a good idea to budget in a cash reserve for bringing them to the vet, rather than spending the money on enlarging your menagerie.
There's no point having 5 different pets and you can't afford the time or money to take care of them, much better keep it at 2 pets but you take very good care of them.

I contacted my vet and he did recommend bringing 3 stools in. But he said from what i told him it sounds like a minor case of coccidia or maybe from the pellet food being exposed to something. He does own a heard of 7 chinchillas himself so he knows from that too. He also asked me to bring in a baggy of the pellet food with me to see if there was a problem. And i do have the money thats no problem for all my pets there all healthy just have been having trouble with the chins.

What do you mean "small holes?"
When my chinchilla had a problem with soft stools I took him to the vet. They did a stool culture and found coccidia eggs. Coccidia is a very common parasite and is likely the same thing you are dealing with. Giardia is also common and can kill your pets if it is not properly treated.
My veterinarian prescribed Albon and another medication called Panacur to cover all their bases. The combination worked very well but it took about a week. Once the stool was back to normal I discarded all the wood and porous items in the cage and replaced them. It's been over a year now and I haven't had a problem since but was told the problem might come back in the future.
Please do not medicate your pets until you get a diagnosis. Whatever you give them might not play well with proper medical treatment and cause dangerous interactions. If you have given them anything please tell your vet up front.
yea these little holes were visible in the stool this was in june. but this time theres no hole whats so ever. plus i think it could be the treats i give them. maybe way to often that i am? i give them tea spoon of herbs as treats as a mix(camolmile, lavender, peppermint). maybe i gotta stop that too. but yea im going to call friday if anything dont want to risk it
plus hopefully i can get some money from my parents to buy replacements for there cage.

my dad told me i can sand down the wood on there shelfs, houses would that make a difference? or should i stay with the safer way and get replacements?

and no i havent medicated them with anything yet and if i did i would consult the vet

Health / chinchilla soft stool again
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:17:46 PM »
i noticed this last night i had fed them there pellet food (oxbow pellets) a few hours after i went to check up on them because they kept bouncing around. but i noticed a soft stool so i picked it up and had a slight odor to them. so what went through my mind was take away the pellets and give them more hay, so i did and went to check on both of them today in the morning and there was a slight change. no more odor but some what still soft. so idk if it has to do with the pellets or not but if it is im planning on switching. this weekend too im also planning on cleaning the full cage its self with water and vinegar to kill off any bacteria. i hope it changes but the end of the week. my aunt reffered a homepathic medication she gave her 3 chins that caught a stomach bug called kocci free and cleared up in 10 days. she had gave all 3 flagyl but never worked it got even worse. so she said if it doesnt clear up by saturday shes giving me that. also i am calling the nearest vet friday just in case it still persist to see what he has in mind and what he thinks it is, since all though i cant self diagnose him.

They can live in the same house and even same room but they should not meet.  They will not bond.  They will ignore each other or they will fight potentially to the death.  For the most part animals do not bond with other species.  It is nice or amusing when you hear about one taking care of the other but those are the exceptions or we wouldn't find the stories so interesting.

Yea i do understand and i'm not willing to take any chance what so ever.

I doubt you'll want those animals to come into contact with each other. Ferrets are predators, like cats but more unpredictable and can get through much smaller spaces which could be a recipe for disaster for your chinchillas. Sugar gliders I don't know too much about other than they are omnivorous and extremely territorial. Chinchillas are territorial as well and much larger, probably more of a danger to your sugar glider if they meet face to face. Health-wise I expect the sugar glider may carry more types of unknown pathogens because of their exotic nature. I have a friend who has a chinchilla and a sugar glider and doesn't have any problems.

It is common practice to quarantine new animals for about four weeks. Just keep them in separate rooms during that time and watch for illness. Of course you'll have to educate yourself on what to watch for and if illness does crop up make sure it's completely taken care of before sharing a room. Some chinchillas can become overly stressed with other animals in the room especially if they are noisy so be careful. If in doubt house them in separate rooms and certainly don't the ferrets loose around chins.

Note: I'm not implying the chin and the sugar glider are bonded. They just live in the same house.

Thank you for replying i am considering putting the other pets i get in my back house since its pretty much one room with A/C and Heater for the weather. But hopefully the day of my birthday works out fine about there housing.

General Chat / Back on! But Important Question
« on: September 04, 2014, 11:13:46 PM »
Hi guys im back on! My boys are ok and doing well. They are still brats from time to time when they want something. Changing the subject my birthday is in a month and a half. And i am planning on bringing another type of pet in my responsiblitiy and home. I still havent decided from either a Pair of Ferrets or Sugar Gliders. Moving to the question, would my chins have to bond with the other pets and vice versa? I wouldnt want a conflict between each other. I am a patient person when it comes to anything especially my pet. But i do lose it when it involves there health. But please let me know as soon as possible if it would be a good idea to home them in the chinchillas room or a separte room. As long as both animals are healthy and away from conflict.

General Chat / Re: Can Chinchillas have those Dont carry me days?
« on: August 11, 2014, 03:58:12 PM »
Chinchillas are highly complex and can be influenced by many factors. Temperature, humidity, how much light they have in a day, sleep time in a day, and even hormone changes that are part of a monthly and yearly cycle. It's not that surprising that animals have days when they are not as calm as others. Some times of day they sleep harder than others as well.
Thats intresting and im going towards the hormones and humidity side my room temperature in my room is 68 degrees and the humidity percent has gone up to 71 % since here in Southern California has been quite humid. But yea i got my chins quite young so there hormones are probably sky rocketing and making them act funny haha but there still healthy no signs of illness of some sort since i check every week and when im not home my dad checks on them for me and the litttle rhings like the poop and nose or to hear for wheezing like noises.

General Chat / Can Chinchillas have those Dont carry me days?
« on: August 08, 2014, 07:52:11 PM »
My chins have this every so often to where i carry them and they will get figity and want to jump off to play or they want to jump off my hands into there cage. But i notice they do this when they want to get there way... With playtime. And they will get mad and different with me but not my brother or my dad lol so all i want to know if this is normal when they have there "Please dont bug me days" and its not me over thinking there something dangerously wrong with them. They eat incredibly fine, excersise and water intake is great. There both alert like there suppose too. They are normally figity when i carry them but its not like to the point when there like literally trying to come off of me to play. I occasionally get scratched from both of them. Ohh funny thing is when im cleaning there cage during there "im mad at you" days they will sneak up to me and bite my hair.. Yea ik nice but other then that they will get tired and pretty cranky so i leave them alone during the rest of the day.

General Chat / important question about changing hay
« on: July 31, 2014, 02:55:39 PM »
today I went to find some timothy hay for my chins but the petsmarts around me aren't getting any for at least a month so I go to a grandma and grandpa pet store and they too didn't have have any for some odd reason so I just got then a 5 pound bag of kaytee timothy hay that will be temporary until I get another bag of oxbow hay. will this affect them in any negative way? I literally had no choice. I am going to introduce it slowly because everyone is suppose to do that but I want to know that they will be ok. I really don't know whats going on with oxbow.

That's funny. I call it the 'crazy five minutes'. Every kind of pet I've had, cats, dogs, horses, goats, birds, have that on occasion.

its so funny i put them away from playtime and both started biting the bars. scratching the fleece on the bottom level throwing there toys everywhere, pooping in there hammock, and the new thing is kicking the poop out the cage and pulling out all the hay from the hay rack lol its funny

General Chat / Re: How to Bond Better with my Aggresive Chin
« on: July 29, 2014, 10:55:53 PM »
In general chinchillas don't like to be picked up and held. They are very sensitive especially when you come down on their back or from behind. They are designed to evade predators such as eagles and foxes and will try to thrash around if they are restrained. If they do it's important they are not allowed to do that as they can seriously injure themselves, especially if it happens inside of the cage.

I've found in my pet, Kulu, that after he was conditioned and then accustomed to being held and handled that there are times when he will jump into my hands because he craves the attention. Like any animal they won't always be in the mood for doing that so usually you have to be the one that initiates it. It is very helpful to learn how to read animals and be observant.

sorry i havent replied and yea he doesnt not like it at all but since last friday hes been hoping on my hand and i can pick him up. bufor only a little bit before he starts figiting around (i dont know if i spelled that right)
