Q & A / Re: Got a ?
« on: June 15, 2010, 12:50:51 PM »
I have 3 big cages and enough time to spare to give them the proper attention they need. This male is a snuggle buddy, he doesn't move around too much at all. Right now, my 2 fems are in one cage and the male is alone. I'm not sure on what I want to do yet.

They got along just fine. I kept the male inside his cage and my females jumped up to the side oh his cage and the warbled a bit and muzzled eachother. But i don't think I'm gonna let them play together. Thank you jmdebb

Q & A / Got a ?

As some of you know, Ive been wanting to rescue chincs in need. Well, ive found one, problem is, thats its a boy, and i have females. I do not want to end up with kits, so he is going into a different cage.
Q1. Can they still play together in the playroom ( after being introduced ), without making little chins?
Q2. How can i tell if my female is in season? Do they have a " heat " like a dog or something?

thank you guys and girls in advance

Josh

First of all, welcome to Chinclub.

As far as a mat for the floor, you can just buy fleece from a fabric store and line the bottom with it. I use kiln dried pine for my bedding, its really cheap. The cheapest place will be at a feed store. As far as a house for him/her, you can buy a little click-together pine house from Petsmart if you want it now. I do most of my business through www.lonestarchinchilla.com/ they are awesome. For the wheel, a metal flying saucer or a chinspin seem to be the best. I have a chinspin from www.qualitycage.com. They are pricey, but chins love them and they are basically silent. As far as rocks, they really wouldnt mess with them much. So i would think as long as they arent small enough to eat, it will be ok. As far as the branches, I would recommend using apple branches.

As far as your food, this is important.. Nutriphase isnt very good. There are a bunch of places that sell good brands, Mazuri, Nutrena ( i use Nutrena ), there are lots more. Normally, you can buy them for about a dollar per lb. Which is cheaper than your Nutriphase.

Most of all, enjoy your new friend

when at a lumber yard, a ' white wood ' means it is an untreated board.

they are social animals, so pairs are preferred and recommended. I bought 1 to start, and you could tell that she was lonely. Just get a same sex pair, or you will end up with about 10 chins before you know it.
is it easier haveing 2 females?i read on and noticed the males dont get along as much as the girls do :P

Im not sure if it is easier or not, but my females got along great. I introduced them in neutral territory, they kinda sniffed eachother out for a minuite, then one mounted the other, then they switched, and that was it. Been playing great ever since. Spend a lot of time cuddling too.

Q & A / Re: BITING?!
« on: June 09, 2010, 05:25:40 PM »
every chin i have ever come into contact with has nibbled on me. i guess its kinda like when dogs " say hello " to eachother. The nibbles dont hurt, just dont touch their treats then try to pet them, they will bite ya then.

it does hurt a little, not too much. They can draw blood, but nothing serious like needing stitches or anything. Well, it doesnt hurt as bad as a tattoo.

i can put a raisin and a craisin in one hand, they will try to take the craisin first everytime, and sometimes, they sneak away with both.. Mine love the craisins, cant say the same for yours tho.

as far as planks go, I would use the kiln dried pine, depending on where you are, ( I am in the US ), you can buy them by the plank at lowes and home depot.. if you look around in those stores, you can probably find some that are precut and probably pretty close to the size you need

I use Craisins, Dried Payapa, Dried Pineapple, Hibiscus, and raisins. I personally dont treat mine as much as you do, but yours are obviously healthy, so no harm done. LoneStarChinchillas.com has samples of all these that you can buy.

i got this little cat carrier from walmart. works well, just made of plastic, so i really keep a close eye on them not to shew. But i would rather them have a few bites of plastic than to get blown away
