Health / Abscessed tooth...
« on: April 12, 2013, 12:28:00 PM »
Nibbles again had to make another trip to the vet. His appointment was for today...but I took him in late Tuesday for antibiotics and the diagnosis has to be an ab
scessed tooth! Rescheduled for Friday (today) Bad tooth out and Nibbles is already drooling less!

We've two chinchillas in a double caged Ferret Nation cage. So tons of space...My husband calls from the pet store today...wanting to BUY a black chinchilla. It kept scratching to get out of the cage it was in...seeming friendly as well.

I know adding a mature male to the mix...even a young one is difficult. I would assume getting one just weaned maybe easier to do.

What's your take on this? Would our chinchillas both males be more apt to adjust to a just weaned male chin? Or...forget it entirely?

Health / Can chins with an eye infection have dust baths?
« on: February 23, 2013, 09:22:28 AM »
Poor Fluffy...he is getting ointment for an eye infection in his eye. And is rubbing on the bottom of the cage like he wants a bath. But, with a bit of ointment around his eye can that lead to more issues? I am imaginng so...

Any advice would be appreciated. ~Thanks!

Health / It is wise to air dry med dispencers...
« on: February 23, 2013, 08:42:34 AM »
A word to the wise...never dry medicine dispencers. I did after drying my hands dried the dispencer and wiped the measuring marks off!

Called our regular vet...which is closer, expained  I realize they don't see exotics but explained my delemia and they said to stop in and they would give us a few more. Thank goodness I didn't do this on a Saturday night. Or I would have no way of administering the correct dose. Contemplating putting electrical tape on the syringe to mark the area for dose to make sure I don't do it again.

Health / A round of antibiotic...
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:01:24 PM »
It has been quite a long time...the chins have been doing great...until just before Christmas. We noticed Nibbles not eating and tossing his pellets on the floor of his cage. Then...drool. So a call to a local exotic vet and couldn't get in...drove two hours one way,to one who could see him that day. He needed his teeth trimmed...sent home with pain mess and critical care.

Then he seem good...then he started to smell funny. So called and got into vet near us. He had a sore on the inside of mouth. So he got a shot...and seemed to get better.
then I noticed his ear down...so trip back to vet...inner ear infection with oral antibiotics.  Forgot to tell me he was to get yogurt. So I noticed his teeth getting lighter. And softer stool. So fed him yogurt. But e stress of what he went through...he started chewing his fur. Non-stop mutilation...and occasional damp nose. Back to vet and on a different antibiotic...giving yogurt. Not seeing him chewing his fur today...so maybe the mess are kicking in. Because it was being symptomatic and making him chew more from irritated skin.

During this entire time...he was only sick looking and lethargic the first time...he now runs on his flying saucer wheel and eats. I continue with a small dose of Critical Care getting rid if their treats. Just hope we're at the end of this...

The vet said he would consider him sick...just symptomatic symptoms. And if he continues to chew...then he is to get a steroid shot Monday. But right now I'm not seeing him chew and his skin is less red.

General Chat / What's going on in Ohio?
« on: February 16, 2011, 04:06:45 PM »
So they have this exotic pet ban...Chinchillas are NOT on the list. But 7 constrictor snakes are. But my Ball Python isn't so it doesn't effect me...I won't need a permit.

BUT

On the reptile forum...
Quote
Seems now they have banned all incoming non native animals period, wow

So what does that mean to those breeders in Ohio with chinchillas? And what...I won't be able to get more once my son grows up and moves away with his?

General Chat / Chewing fur now...
« on: November 19, 2010, 11:56:50 AM »
For some who may not know what's going on...
http://www.chinchillaclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,3050.0.html

So...his feet hasn't bled since Sunday...I have been alternating Bag Balm and Blue Kote on his feet. I honestly don't think they look that bad. Better actually than Sunday and no more bleeding.

I removed his flying saucer when I noticed his foot issue. So I'm not sure if it's boredom with no wheel or the stress of his feet bothering him. Though he's eating and drinking and being social. When I apply the stuff to his feet he doesn't seem in pain. Actually closes his eyes like he's enjoying it. Doesn't fight me or anything once I'm applying it to his feet.

I hate that he's chewing his fur... :'(

Health / BLOOD IN CAGE...
« on: November 14, 2010, 12:50:16 PM »
Woke to find blood in the cage...It's dried blood...I examined both chins and it seems Nibbles has blood on his feet. All dried blood. So I'm not even sure where it came from. Now...how do I go about cleaning it up and finding out where it came from...He's still running on his exerciser. At least he was this morning...and when we came home from church it looks like MORE blood on his flying saucer. Yet I took him out and can't find any wet spot where it came from...I'm thinking a foot some place...but need to clean him up. Thinking the running on his wheel caused it to reopen maybe? So take out the wheel for the time being...is what I'm thinking needs done.

I plan on checking past history to see if I can find my answer...but in case I can't...I'm posting this to see what might be told to me.

Any advice is much appreciated...

General Chat / Chins to the basement...tornado spotted
« on: June 04, 2010, 06:30:30 PM »
My dad called to say a tornado was spotted in the next town over. And that it was headed for us. So...I gathered the kids and their friend and critters and headed to the basement. The friend couldn't believe we gathered all the critters...two turtles...two bulldogs...two chinchillas and headed to the basement. Left the snake...due to him being just fed, and the chances of a tornado was less a chance than handling him and him reguritating. I told them if I heard a train I would run up and grab him. But luckily it didn't hit our area. PHEW! But poor Nibbles was stressed in the basement...I told the kids he was most likely having flashbacks from when Sarge chased him down to the furnace room awhile back...after chattering with him and giving him luvin's...he settled down.

General Chat / Nibbles is using the Flying Saucer already...
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:36:33 AM »
::silly:: But not for the intended us...but for a ledge to nap on... :D I at first thought one of them was using it. Due to my seeing droppings on it. But...I reckon it's from nappy times instead.  ::)

I've not seen anyone use it so far...when we first placed it in...they would jump on it and spin off. But I've seen them sit on their back legs...and use their front legs to turn the wheel. Like..."Hugh, it moves" But that's about as much action it's gotten so far.

But I know that it takes a bit of time for them to get used to it. So...until then...it's a great place for a nap. ;)

General Chat / Grooming each other...
« on: May 20, 2010, 02:34:05 PM »
I noticed today...that Fluffy was grooming himself. Then went over to Nibbles and started doing the same thing to him. Like chewing on his face and he rolled over and he continued to groom him all over. Then Nibbles in turn...returned the favor and groomed Fluffy. This is the first time I've seen them do this. Is it common for males to groom each other? They've been together since they were weaned. They are just a little over a year old.

I got a call...saying there was a problem with our playpen we ordered. That they didn't have any in stock. And that...unless we went with the 2 ft one. Which was the one my husband said to get. I just ended up having her order the 30 inch...just to be safe. But...looks like we'll be getting the 2 ft one after all. Which is the same height as the bed. So...as long as they don't jump over it and onto the bed. We'll be OK...So...we'll see. They said if it doesn't work. We can return it. So there is that option.  :)

Health / When can I open up the cage again?
« on: May 18, 2010, 05:02:08 PM »
Most know about the incident with the chinchillas getting out. And Nibbles favoring his back foot. Well...he's using it now. And scampering around the cage. And perching on the food container that is mounted on the side of the wall. Playing in the PVC pipe and seems to be getting along fine.

My husband wanted to know if we could open the bottom of the cage now. I'm not sure...Should I give him a week of recoup time? [To be certain he's fully mended] Or open it back up now. The incident occurred what...like Friday night.

Health / Incident last night...scare of a lifetime!
« on: May 15, 2010, 01:43:20 PM »
We've always known that the one cage door you have to push on to make sure it latches. Well...someone forgot to listen and the chins got out!

We didn't even KNOW this. Pizza delivered...and were eating when my husband came home to see the bulldog chase something into the furnace room. [Thinking a squirrel got into the house]

Ran to find flashlights. Cole keeps on beside his bed. And noticed the door to the cage open! I freaked...for the sliding door had been open when I came in from the backyard. Thinking...could one have gotten outside...I actually vomitted from fear one got outside.

Luckily...Fluffy never left the bedroom. And we found Nibbles in the furnace room petrified hiding among the crib that's torn down and stored there. He wasn't "chewed" but the tips of fur was like dried from being wet. It was less than 15 minutes to locate him...And he wasn't wet when I picked him up. We have central air. So maybe the condensation of the furnace from that running? Anyways...I called the Emergency vet. And told them what happened.

They didn't seem concerned in the least. No he's not bleeding. No he's not breathing heavy... Yes he ate food once placed in his crate. Offered him a dust bath and he used it. But he's favoring his one back foot. They said he may have taken a tumble down the stairs to the basement...and possibly bruised it.

I can't see where the dog actually caught him. [Sarge doesn't move exactly fast] It isn't hanging limp...And he did scratch his ear with the foot in question earlier today. He also was chewing on a wooden chew as well today and standing on his back feet.

I  did closed off the top of his cage and have both the chins together up on top so he doesnt' attempt to jump to the top part of the cage. Since they cuddle a lot I kept them together. Our vet is out until Monday. So he has less area to move around and doesn't have access to the opening that allows him to jump  from the top part to the lower section. So he can have more rest. I offered him another bath today. Just to see if he could use it. And he did...he tossed around more than he did last night while in the bath. And...used his litter box and perched on the edge with his back feet. And ate some food from the feeder on the  side of the cage. And did seem to use it a little more than last night. He was up hopping around while I cleaned my son's room but slower than normal. [Wiped walls down due to the dust baths in there] But ever so often...I notice him lifting his back foot while he hops. I'm frustrated that I can't seem to locate a vet that will look at him.  :flames:

I'm thinking...I doubt the flying saucer will make it to the cage next weekend. When I give it to my son for his birthday. I cried off and on last night...thinking "He can't die the week before my son's birthday". I was so distressed. My husband offered to sleep on the floor in front of the cage to check on him through out the night.

Q & A / Play pens?
« on: May 07, 2010, 02:18:32 PM »
I'm trying to locate something I can lean up against my son's bed...so they can't get under it. And also I'll have it go around his wine chiller so they won't chew on the cords of his lamp and chiller. I called Petsmart...and asked about their rabbit play pens...and the woman laughed and said..."Chinchillas jump to tall that would never work"...so...What can I use to keep them from getting into places to protect them? We've plastic totes that pull out with his stuffed animals in them under his bed. So another reason not to let them under there...for they would eat the plastic.

So...I'm at a loss. Anyone have any good tips or suggestions of products. I'm off to check the review products...I just recalled that as an option. But...would like to here what works well with other chin owners.

Thanks so much~ ;)
