Sadly, Yeah. The poem was beautiful though. I'm doing much, much better now that some time has passed. Haze provides me with some comfort though he will never be able to replace Volley.

Haze -seemed- calmer. but then when i was done he continued to be calmer. i think he's having just a touch of depression since volleys passing. tres sad but at the same time he's very sit to sit and watch tv with for now heheh

maybe he's a white mosiac? I'm not too savvy on the color mutations myself. But there are plenty of guides online Actually, I think I found one on this site earlier! I bet if you got a picture of him there's lots of members on here who could help you figure out what snowie's color is.

Thank you for the comfort regarding Volley. He's greatly missed by the whole family.

Donna, you took the words straight from my heart. I wish I could artfully describe the loss of a loved chinchilla, but I know I could never describe it as you have here.

Whether we're able to voice it, write it, or illustrate it another way, our chins always know how we're feeling. And I know all of our lost furry ones know that we miss them.

To Billy and Volley! Here's to their time on earth with us, and to the eternity they will have in chinchilla heaven. They will both have lots of company up there.

I think I will make a memorial for him on rainbowsbridge. I just cannot afford it right now. I saved all the stuff I'd like to write on there to a word document until I have some spare cash. Unfortunately his trips to the doctor at the end drained my bank account. I'm going out to the lady who I used to get art lessons from to do a little gravestone for him where we had buried him. It will have to do for now but I think that would be nice for him to have an online memorial for people to sign and remember him. It's an excellent idea. and the cost all goes to a good cause.

Thanks Jo Ann! You should write a book. I'd certainly buy it.

Great thing to know about the plastic. A friend of mine was talking about wheels and how 100 bucks is just way too much for a metal saucer for us right now. (we're both "just starting out." so our job situation is on and off all the freakin time lately) But if it's hazardous then maybe we'll just wait until we have a few extra dollars to play with.

I'll have to ask petco if it's possible to order one. I doubt anything in Canada can. I suppose it doesn't hurt anyone to try though. I'd love to have haze able to have free reign over the upstairs. We'll have to get a chinny gate for the stairs. Mom would probably love it if we can get him exercise without him jumping all over her on the couch while she knits hahah.

Heehee I'm glad you like the kitty avatar! I snagged it off random website god knows how long ago. But I'd like to animate my own sometime with perhaps a chinny instead of a kitty. In due time when things slow down.. And I'm sure they will.

I've been looking over at poor haze and well.. he needs to shed some pounds. I used to have a chinchilla ball but it was an 11.5" diameter ball which from what I understand is WAY too small! I gave it to a friend anyway but now the biggest one I can find is 13" diameter.

Is this going to be big enough for him? Is there a website or a store where they sell 14" or bigger diameter chinchilla balls? I've yet to find any but I figured maybe someone on here might know of one.

Also I've heard about these saucer things. But the metal ones are close to 100 bucks american! OUCH! anyone know if there's a more affordable place to shop for these? I don't know if my chin will even figure it out. :S I dont want to shell out 100 bucks and find out that he just doesnt get it.

Also are solid plastic wheels okay if they're big enough? I know wheels that have the metal rungs or any rungs at all really are no good. We don't want their feet to get stuck after all! I've seen these "silent spinners" at the petco down in Pennsylvania. Actually my hamster I have down there enjoys her silent spinner each night. 12" diameter is the biggest they have there though. Again, would this be safe for a chin ? They advertise a chin running on it but it still seems like it could be a little small.

Wow Jo Ann I can't thank you enough for all of this information. We gave Volley lots of peanuts which could have been the cause of his liver failure. Excellent information to know. We just never knew better. I'm a little smarter now, and I don't know if it's too late to reverse it on Haze but I can certainly try. He still seems healthy though he is a tad overweight. We're going to be changing his diet and getting him a larger ball to run in. (He outgrew the first one, and I notice only petco in the US sells bigger chinchilla balls so it'll have to wait until I visit my boyfriend next.) I just can't handle driving in Michigan to find a pet store. My boyfriend is out in Pennsylvania which is far more pleasant to drive around in. Farther away but... I don't fear for my life down there.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Even for someone so new to the boards. I'm sure mocha, billy and volley are all cuddling up in chinny heaven together He never was one for playing too much, he just loved to cuddle with his stuffed animals and his mum. I have a picture of him attached thanks to my sisters wonderful photography skills and her big fancy camera.
I'm on my way to read Chinchilla in a locket. I envy your ability to write poetry, I was never good at it. Should I find some free time though, I just might be able to make a little animated avatar of volley.
On a side note, back in college I immortalized Volley in my third year project titled "Chinzilla." It was a nickname we gave him back when he was a real BIG boy.

Thank you again for your kind words. Volley sure will be missed. He has 2 memorials on flickr through my sister and my mom, and dad sent out a mass email memorial to all of the family.

I know I'm new here but I figure I should honor Volleys passing regardless.

Volley was born in August 2001 and died May 5th - 2009. He was my black velvet little man. He was always a source of comfort any time I had a bad breakup in highschool or when work just seemed to get overwhelming during college. He'd always be my cheer chinny when it came to job hunting and starting my career. It was difficult to choose to have him put to sleep today. He started losing weight very rapidly over the past 4 months or so and I learned it was because his liver was failing. His blood pressure dropped so low that doctors couldn't even get a sample from him.

He had a nice little funeral in the back yard where he was buried in his nice little home made coffin curtosey of dad. And we left him with one of his favourtie stuffed buddies and the towel we used whenever he had to see the doctors. I'll admit, I'm still very upset that he is gone. But I'm glad he isn't suffering anymore. I'm going to miss him so much... He  lives on in my memory though. And I have his favourtie stuffed buddy next to my favourtie teddy when I was a kid. They are strangely similar in looks because we seem to destroy our stuffed animals in a similar manner.

RIP Volley aka Mr Fluffy Bum. I miss you!

Hey,

My name is Sarah. I'm from Canada and I used to have two chinchillas. Sadly today I had to have one put to sleep (His name was Volley.) I still have Haze though so I guess that still gives me a purpose to have an account here eh?

I bought Volley back in October 2001. He was a little black velvet runt and he was just such a nice little man over his past 7 years. He was always so chill whenever I held him and would sit there for hours while just being pet and loved. Unfortunately over the past few months his liver began to fail and last night he took a turn for the worst when his blood pressure got so low that the doctors couldn't get a sample to test from.

Haze was born in 2002 or 2003 (we aren't too sure) and I adopted him off a friend in 2005. He's Volleys polar opposite in the sense that he is just wried all the time. He's a violet chinchilla with little purple freckles on his ears and nose. He sheds like it's going out of style but he seems to be healthy as a horse thus far. He's a wee bit fat so I just might have to get him on a diet SOON now that I know what obesity did to my poor little Volley.

As far for a little bit about me? I'm 22 years old and I am a freelance animator/graphic designer/web designer. I just started my own small business called ScunCo Media and I am working with a few coworkers from when I worked in Toronto on a new iPhone / iPod touch application. I still technically live with my parents, however I often drive down to pennsylvania to visit with my boyfriend for a few weeks at a time. (Working from home does indeed have its perks.) I just can't justify getting my own place right now because I'll probably be moving down to pennsylvania soon to live with my boyfriend. (Once we start and finish the whole green card process, I'll probably be 45 or something LOL)

That's pretty well me in a nutshell. I seem to be learning more and more about my chinchillas every day and each time I feel as if I didn't know anything at all about them. Volley lived to be nearly 8 years old. I don't really know if that's a good or bad lifespan for a black velvet. Every website seems to have different life expectancies for these little guys.
