Health / Re: No fur on nose! Please help!!
« on: March 19, 2014, 08:21:03 AM »
it is also a sign of a bar chewer I have on of my girls that chronically has a bald nose from sticking it through the cage wire it simply rubbed off. if you chinchillas skin is not dry and scally it is likely a fur slip or rubbed off

Health / Re: Matted fur and possible pain around rear leg

it takes 3 months for fur to grow fully back developing from nose to tail. some chinchillas are stress chewers and it can often be corrected by a change in cage size or location. it can also be caused when diatary needs are not being met

Breeding 101 / Re: looking to breed my chin

You can just get your male a same sex buddy. A reputable breeder will not breed a male just to breed

Vets know very little about chinchillas. In vet school chinchillas are covered in a single lesson that includes rabbits and cavies.

One thing to consider...the chinchilla is not likely spayed. I have seen it over and over again. They see the line that goes down the mid section naturally and say... Oh this girl was already spayed or the vet cuts her open and says oh I don't see the uterus...must already be spayed. No joke I have seen this happen at least 10 times in the last few months where an owner ends up with babies from a spayed animal.

Sounds like respiratory distress the chinchilla needs a vet chinchillas do not generally get that depressed at the loss of a cagemate. They may go slightly off thier feed but nothing that severe you have a very sick animal.

There is no rhyme or reason chinchillas are animals and not logic. If they do not get along at playtime just keep them Separate or you will have dead chinchillas

Some Chinchillas just will not tt along Chinchillas are animals and do not recognize family as family. If you try to force them together you will end up with a dead chinchilla

Conformation and Quality / Re: beige hetero or homo

My long post didn't go through and since I am on a phone short and simple.and somewhat harsh but honest...

Don't breed your petstore animals.  You will produce crappy babies who's health issues will break thier owners heart and leave rescuers a huge mess to clean up.  If you want to breed go to a reputable...REPUTABLE ....breeder and get high quality breeding stock.   No body wants a chinchilla from someone breeding mutation to mutation just based on what colors they can get..that.is genetically unsound and ends up with a defect.

I dont let them have a wheel until they are done growing. I used to let them from weaning on and learned really quick it is condusive to growing chinchillas

I take care of all the chinchillas regaurdless of age the same way.
If you give them a wheel to young, it will stunt their growth, and babies have less coordiniation and are more likely to injure themselves

if the baby nips you a little rough a quick puff of air in the face will discourage it, but mostly it is just time.

A homo beige will be very pale and have pale pink eyes.

But honestly if you are not breeding it really doesn't matter

If you are limited to pet store food, they do sell Oxbow and Mazuri. As for pet store food those two are really the only ones I would feed.
