Hello, Debbie!  Nice to meet you as well.   :)
I post occasionally on C-n-Q, on my own forum, and now here.  Other than that, I stick to LJ communities (chinchillin and chinchilla_love).
I look forward to learning from you too!

I think it's great that there are breeders who do take the time to breed violets and sapphires properly and who have that dedication and patience!   ::nod::

I hear you on the tan/beige , had my first light tan born a few weeks ago. I'm thinking he's a tan now. I was calling him a hetero beige, but his tummy isn't getting white.

I sold one of my kits earlier this year thinking he was a Homo Light Tan, but now I am thinking he might be a Homo Beige.  I got an updated picture of him and his belly looks very light, though not bright white...

Oh, how confusing it can sometimes be!

I don't and won't breed my violet, I just don't think they'd sell here.
I think it takes a LOT of work to breed Violets and Sapphires and have them maintain good fur quality.  I'm just not willing to do it, myself.  I'll work with the mutations that are a bit easier.  I'm just lazy like that, I guess.   ;D

Oh!  It's been perfectly fine for me!  I've only had to order from Kleenmama's twice in the last... 4 years?  I just wanted to let people know it's an option.   :)  It's much better than Kaytee hay, in my opinion.

If he eats plenty of hay seperately should that be okay?
Not necessarily.  But you honestly might not have any other options there.   :::(((

Thank you, hope!  I should probably take updated pictures soon, shouldn't I?   ::phhhhhhth::

She and I use the same feed store.  If I don't like the look of the hay they have, buying it through Susan isn't going to make it any better.   rofl

Well he gets his hay seperately anyway so that doesn't matter.  ::nod::
Except that it does...  It should be the primary ingredient in the pellet.  Hay is the most essential part of the chinchilla's diet and the hay should also be found in the pellet.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear any of the UK available pellets have hay in them.

If people are having trouble getting fresh hay locally, they may also consider ordering through Kleenmama's Hayloft.  I've ordered through them when the hay at my favorite feedstore has looked more brown than I'd like.  They have wonderful hay.  Shipping, as with anything, is expensive, but the cost of the hay itself and the fact that it is of high quality helps to offset that price.

I looked over at Greenwood Chinchillas to see what they feed, as they seem to be very informed, and I see they feed Charnwoods but prefer Jordans.  They also mention that most people seem to feed Duggins.

I'm concerned about the fact that hay (either Timothy or Alfalfa) isn't listed as an ingredient in ANY of these pellets.   :-\

If you're going to use newspaper, I recommend using newspaper with no print.  The inks have the potential to be toxic.

I think for the most common colors, I'd go with:
Standard
Black Velvet
Beige
Mosaic
Ebony
Violet
Sapphire

The others are all basically combinations of the above.  (i.e. Brown Velvet = Beige + Black Velvet, Tan = Beige + Ebony, etc.)

I wouldn't be surprised, Sarah.  This forum is so different from mine...  I find I'm pretty easily confused.   :D
