General Chat / Re: Chinchilla Ranch?

Are you meaning that instead of "ranch" a large chinchilla breeder might be called something like a "farm" or "mill" or something?   :-\

Is the annual on-line show still being held?  I can't seem to find anything more recent than 2004...

New Births / Re: Twins! (Born 10/12)

*lol at Jamie*  It's okay.  We forgive you!

My favorite color is Mosaic because of the fact that they continue to change color and pattern for so long.  In this litter, the Dark Tan is starting to look more and more like Mom!  I'm thrilled.  I always thought she was a Medium Tan until she threw a Dark Ebony kit.  (I've attached pictures of Mom and the surprise Ebony that let me know she's a DARK Tan.)

Hard to say...  She was rescued by a vet at a dump in Rocky Point, Mexico.  She appears to be a border collie mix.   :)

I think this is a really cute idea!  Unfortunately, with as many chins as I have, I can't post pictures of them all.  But here's a picture of my dog, Mara, and me taken at the beginning of this year.

Although my hair is a bit shorter now, you get the idea!   ;D

Guestbook / Hello from Arizona!
« on: October 17, 2006, 01:42:00 AM »
I've been exploring the board and I seem to have gone about things a bit backwards...  I already started posting under various topics and I never told anyone who I am!  ;D

My name is Elizabeth and I live in Tucson.  I currently have seven breeding pairs and one pair that will soon be added.  I also am over-whelmed with chinnies for sale at the moment, so feel free to check out my profile to see pictures of them.   :::grins::

I work full time in a call center helping people get roadside assistance when they break down.  I also am in school full time and will be getting my degree as a Veterinary Technician next spring.  In my "spare time" (what's that?) I run The CHINformation Organization in an effort to help as many people as possible learn as much as they can about chinchillas.  I also help to moderate the chinchillin community on LiveJournal and I work to maintain my chinchilla website, ChinchillAZ.org.

I love all of the wonderful changed taking place with The Chinchilla Club.  Kudos on a job well done!   ::clapp::

New Births / Twins! (Born 10/12)
« on: October 17, 2006, 12:56:09 AM »
Harold (Beige) and Henna (Dark Tan) have welcomed their fifth litter into the world.  I'm really pleased by how dark one of the babies is...  I'm looking forward to seeing how both develop and trying to determine if the lighter kit is a Tan or a Beige.  (The tummy is too small to tell for sure at this point!)

General Breeder Chat / Re: Slow breeding males
« on: October 17, 2006, 12:49:15 AM »
I'm in complete agreement with Jo Ann and Jamie...
I have a Mosaic male that I paired with a BV female and expected beautiful babies.  After over a year of them being together, I figured kits were never going to happen.  I was delightfully surprised when my BV gave birth to TRIPLETS seventeen months after they were paired.   :2funny:
Because I never expected it to happen, I knew I had to keep at least one of the offspring, as I wasn't sure they would ever have another litter.  As it turns out, they're just slow about things.  They welcomed their fourth kit into the world eight months after the first three.

General Breeder Chat / Re: Breed for ebony
« on: October 17, 2006, 12:40:54 AM »
I haven't personally noticed that food has anything at all to do with the genetics that are thrown.  I have found that some chinchillas are more likely to throw the Ebony gene than others, though.

As an example, I have a Dark Ebony male and a Standard female paired.  They have had nine kits together and every one of them has been an Ebony.  However, I briefly paired the Dark Ebony male with a Mosaic female and I paired the Standard female with a TOV Dark Ebony male.  I found that the Dark Ebony/Mosaic pair threw one Ebony and one White Ebony kit and that the TOV Dark Ebony/Standard pair threw two Standard kits.

Obviously, my Dark Ebony male throws Ebony VERY well, having never produced a kit that didn't show the Ebony gene.  On the other hand, the TOV Dark Ebony male did not throw Ebony as well.  When he was paired with another Ebony, they produced seven Ebonies and one Standard.
