Color possibilities of kits?
« on: July 18, 2007, 06:35:15 PM »

We took in several chins a few weeks ago.  One of the females is pregnant.  She is a beautiful Wilson White.  Her mate is a 1,000 gram boy that looks to be either a tan or beige.  His eyes are a hazel brown, very nice!  So my thought is he is a tan.  What are the color possibilities for her kits?  If the male is a tan and if the male is a beige?  I couldn't figure out what to punch in for the Silver Falls Calculator!
Maybe some of you can help!  From the calculator or from personal experience.

OK, I am going to take a stab at this just to see if I am right.  I could be totally wrong BUT the Ritterspach website says Wilson White is an "incomplete dominant" and goes on to say that all white mosaics and silver mosaics are a form of wilson white.  So I guess you would put in white and standard for the dam at Silverfall.

As for the father, does he have a white belly?  Or is he all one general color?  I thought that in order to be a beige the chin HAS to have a white belly, otherwise he would be almost certainly be some shade of tan.

If I am right in what I have then according to Silverfall you have 12 color possibilities, the most likely of which would tan, ebony, tan white, or ebony white, IF the father is a tan.  IF he is a beige then you have equal chance of getting standard, hetero-beige, pink white, or mosaic.

This brings me to a question of my own.  How does one decide whether a chin is light, medium, or dark in color?  Is this just a judgement thing?

;) Hi Abby, hey thanks!  I think dad is a tan because I was told all beiges have red eyes.  He doesn't have red eyes.  This momma has had 2 previous litters (in case this helps the mystery)
She has had:   litter #1 a standard,   litter #2 a mosaic,
litter #3 were triplets, a standard, and 2 beige or tan (I have these kits here also and still have not figured out what they are!!!!)

Wonder if she'll have triplerts again?  Anyone ever see a pattern or is there NO rhyme or reason to any of it!

 I don't think I'll ever get that "white tummy" thing down!  I have several that we have taken in over the years that we still have no idea if they are beige or tan.  Exactly how white does the tummy have to be when we have a beige?  Some of these chins really don't have a super white belly, it looks more like a lighter version of the hair color on their back.   :-\  But I can't tell.
I think if they are dark tan you KNOW they are tan!  But if they are a lighten tan it can be tricky.  Can someone post a pic of a beige chin's belly VS a tan's belly?
Or maybe I'll post a pic of a few of mine and you all can tell me what you think they are!

OK, lets see....White to a tan could produce
tan (very light to very dark)
ebony (very light to very dark)
tan white (or tan mosaic)
ebony white

White to a Beige could produce
Standard
White Mosaic
Beige
Pink White (which could be solid white with pink ears & red eyes  or a creamy color all over, or a beige and white mosaic pattern)

Also, on the red eye thing... Al beiges do have red eyes, but hetero beige could have such dark red eyes that they look black in normal house light.  Sometimes you have to take them to a window with sunlight to really see the red.

;) Thanks so much Jamie!  I really appreciate you posting the pics.  I still after all these years haven't quite caught on to this picture posting stuff  ::shrug::   I am old

So you think Daddy Sahara & his kits are Hetero Beige Huh?  Sahara's eyes in the daytime light are a pretty hazel brown color, they just show up as red from the flash.
So for future reference is this a pretty common white belly?

Can a hetero beige have brown eyes?

We have a female chin that we took in that is light tan or beige of some sort but she has very pretty blue eyes!  And yes in the day light they are blue not red.  I have never seen this before.

I have to agree with Jamie, I think he is a hetero-beige.  His eyes are probably just a really deep shade of red, which would make them look more like a brown/hazel.  I am no expert on beiges, but I think the belly color he has is pretty common.  I have never had a beige myself who has the kind of white belly you would find on a standard.  It seems to be more of a cream color, but always significantly lighter than the back fur.  As far as the blue eyes go, I have heard of blue-eyed chins.  It must be a recessive trait, but I don't know much about it.  I don't know if or how it might affect how she fits into a breeding program.

Has anyone else had any experience dealing with blue-eyed chins?
