Undescended Testicles
« on: October 25, 2006, 04:35:19 PM »

::shrug:: I have a white ebony male who is 14 months old now.  He is gorgeous, friendly, very active, eats & drinks well etc.......
Only one thing makes him different from the rest of my males.  He has no testicles, at least none you can actually see.
It seems like they just never dropped like all of the other males.
Yes, he is definitely a boy and has his other male part which looks perfectly normal.
Anyone know anything about this subject or ever have a male that had undescened testicles?
I guess it really is no big deal to me because I never plan to breed. I assume he would not be able to get a female pregnant?  But, his condition does not pose a threat to him medically does it?

Chinchillas, like rabbits, have no true scrotal sac.  As such, they have the ability to pull the testicles up into their abdomenal area so that they aren't as obvious.  He would likely still be able to impregnate a female.

I agree, they are just more obvious in some males than in others.

;D  I had someone tell me that their vet "poked at them" to see if her chinchilla was a male or female.  My only thought was, "I've never had to poke at any of my males!"

Well, not only that, but you'd think a VET would know to look at the urogenital to anal distance and leave the poking stick out of it!   :2funny:

One can only hope...  But the person who told me about it didn't mention any such lesson.   ;D

Well, I think it is possible for a chin to be quite ambiguous.  I had one that everyone believed was a male; the breeder, the exotic veterinarian, etc....right up until "he" birthed two kits.    ???
Talk about a shock!  The breeder has been around for a long time, as has the vet, so this was not a question of experience.   We decided she is just a very masculine female.  Oh well, we love her anyway  ::nod::

But you have to admit that such a case isn't the norm and that the "poking vet" probably just didn't have enough experience to be able to properly sex this girl's poor chinchilla.   ::)
