Two things:
1. I recently gave Doodle a rubber duck as a prop for pictures. He tried to eat it. So note to chin parents: don't give chinchillas ducks.

i gave popsicle a toy. he tried to eat it.

i gave him a running wheel, he tried to eat it.

i gave him a house, a maze, a food bowl, reading material, platforms... he tried to eat them all.

...

sadly, theres a lot of stuff i dont give him. ... he tries to eat it anyway. NAUGHTY FELLA!!!

Chinchillas will try to chew on anything.  Unlike most animals they don't seem to have the caution against new foods that helps keep them from eating poisonous or indigestible items in the wild.  They just chew on whatever comes within reach.  Maybe with the limited plants where they live it is safe to eat everything or maybe it got bred out of them.  ::shrug::  You should make sure everything around your chin is safe to ingest or impossible to chew like metal wheels.  Although mine can damage powder coated wire on their cages, there are rough areas where they beg for treats, so they could probably leave little marks on a wheel if they really wanted to go at it.

They can chew through 1/4" of aluminum and if they wanted to can destroy an aluminum chinchilla wheel. I've seen it photos of that.

My homemade wooden chinchilla wheel has had a 1x2x7cm  chunk taken out of it.

I don't have wheels with my more destructive chinchillas so I haven't seen it.  Those have lots of wood.  They still chew on bars some.  Not to an annoying degree but enough to scrape them up.  Katsu says the apple orchard should get it's trees trimmed for the year.  I've been raiding the crab apple tree between parking lots since our condo association does not spray or maintain anything except mowing the grass.  I'm running out of branches that hang down in to the cars so I have an excuse to break them.  Other people had been breaking them off as the branches leaned down in the way.
