Lump on 5 days old baby neck from bite
« on: March 30, 2013, 04:59:28 PM »

The mom bit the baby on top of her neck Thursday morning. She cleaned the dry blood off but now it is a hard lump. Should I be worried or could it be a scab that will go away?? The mom and the baby are acting normal sleeping together and still drinking mothers milk. the baby doesn't seem to mind if I touch and look at it. How can I tell if its infected?

How large is the lump? Can you provide a photo?

Also can you tell if there is redness?

Monitor its size. If it grows or gets red it is a sign of infection. If you see a change in behavior it is an emergency.

There is no redness that I can see, it looks skin color and texture of a scab. The lump is about the size of a corn kernel. It was hard to get a good picture I didn't want to force the head down, Error with the picture I'm trying to upload

At least you have a photo for your own reference. If you still wish to post it you'll have to reformat the picture so it's smaller than 128 Kilobytes.

The size of the lump sounds kind of big to me. Make sure that it does not grow larger, redden or leak pus (white or opaque fluid). Deep wounds often will drain clear fluid for a day or two but that is normal. Also make sure that it does not gape open exposing the flesh beneath it. Usually these kinds of wounds heal on their own without any trouble. Make sure the cage is swept daily and kept free of dust to minimize the risk of infection.

Yes watch for signs of infection. Is it opened? That poor baby. :::(((
I showed a female another's newborn one time and she grab hold of the forehead and tore a huge chunk out of the babies head. Just like being scalped. I couldn't believe she'd do that and thought for sure I had killed the poor thing. It healed up just fine. ::nod::
