Chinchilla Behavior

Hey everyone:

My two new chins Casper and Smokey (boys) are nice, but still a little timid, I think. They are 4-5 months old and I have had them for about a month and a half.

When I open the cage door, they start making this little whiney noise (sometimes) and if I reach in (slowly) to pet them they kack and make these throat sounding noises and stand up on their hind legs. But, they both like being scratched under the chin. Most of the time, I can manage to scratch them and they stop.

Whats funny is they make all of these noises at me (seems like they are upset with me) when they are inside of their cage, but if I set them ontop of their cage to run around or if I  have them out for playtime, they do not make such noises.

During all occasions they both take treats from me.


Do you think they are making their noises since I am invading their home?

Yes.  As they bond more with you it will stop.  Just be sure you don't ever leave them alone when they do that.  Its like having a puppy that growls at you.  If you back off they learn that they are the boss and the behavior gets worse.

Ok, cool, when they do that I either pick them up or scratch them on the chin hahah.

What do I do if they run away while making the noise? Do I still keep after them?

I'd say yes but be quick about it. You can pick him up and hold him until he quiets down (no more than about 20 seconds) then put him back. If he doesn't quiet down and is extremely stressed and fighting the whole time then maybe he's not tame enough for that. Do this three times a day and it will help with taming. This method worked with mine.

They are fine once they are in my grasp, they just arent too happy while we are getting to that point, most of the time. Sometimes they come fine.
