Cage Question
« on: March 07, 2011, 08:07:32 PM »

Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting a new cage for my chinchilla and i really like the Feisty Ferret Cage. Here's a link to it. http://www.futurepets.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=PR485 I thought the cage was perfect for my chinchilla but Jean just told me that it will break if I put a wheel on it. I have a flying saucer that i bought from Quality cage and i would love to put it in Bambi's new home. What do you guys think I should do? Or do you know any cage that's about the same price/size?
Thanks in advance

I got my FN 142 brand new for 150+tax.  I love it.  I found it online and my local pet store matched the price no questions asked.    Its been awhile so I dont exactly remember where I found the price.  I did search and find it off yahoo.  Good luck.

I upgraded recently to a Ferret Nation cage when I got my second chinchilla. It's slightly more expensive but it has the same basic format, only it's going to be much sturdier and it's also wider, including platforms, so Bambi would have room both to go up and down, and to run around.  :)

hi, when i said that, i meant a chin spin wheel..  i have no clue how a flying sauce will be.. the chin spins are heavy.. so if the flying saucer is lightweight, you might be fine.

jean

sry for the confusion on that.

ok so it's either between FN142 or feisty ferret home. I really like the feisty ferret home because the tray is below the wire and that's where I like to put bambi's bedding, I don't like the fact that FN 142 has the tray above the wire, that means bambi would have a change to eat the bedding. which cage do you think i should buy? If any of you guys have one of the cage, is FN 142 really that good/strong and is Feisty Ferret Home really that weak?

Like i said I have 2 of the FN142, I looked at the Fiesty Ferret Cage, they are ok, just not top quality.  The FN ones are awesome, but do cost more.  Its up to your budget and your personal preference.  I use wood shavings and have no probs with the chins chewing on them.  Everyones happy and I have 8 chins in 2 cages.  They have tons of room.

@Jhenderson do you have to take out the ladders? I heard their feet can get stuck in there

yes, take the ladders out, their feet can get caught up and they can break a leg... possably needing amputation.

i have both.  i love the fns because both sides of the doors open.  if you use the fiesty ferret and use the metal bar tray thingy, you have to cover it with something becaues the bars are too far apart, his legs will get caught threw them.  with the fn, you can order pans from bassequipment.com and they fit perfect and work perfect.  they sit on top of the metal bars.

i took my metal bars out of the fiesty ferret and put fleece over the plastic tray.  i have to call bass to see if they have a metal try for that cage also.  on the fiesty ferret, both sides of teh doors do not open.

its not a bad cage tho if you don't want something as big as the fn.  any other questions, please ask.

I did not take my ladders out, I built custom inserts for the ladders.  I have hard plexiglass custom fit under the ridges, unable to be chewed so their feet cannot fall down between.  Works like a charm.  I just gotta do my new FN's ladders.  Everyone seems to be find without them, however, better safe than sorry.

Yes, my FN actually came with coverings, but I ended up with only one ramp-- the one connecting the lower half to the upper half. It's always good to try and make them get more exercise in by jumping, but I don't think my chin likes the prospect of jumping straight up through a hole!  ;)
