Making a cage

Hello, I've had my chin since last August and have him an old cage that is on the small side, But in the fall I will be starting college and the time i will be able to spend with him will be very limited.  :'( I plan on making him a bigger better cage. Are there any supplies that would be better than others and are there any that I should avoid? :chin:
If there is anything else you think i should know I would love to hear it.

Go with the small mesh 1/4 inch it keeps droppings and shavings in the cage better than the 1/2 inch.
If your planning on a wood frame make sure it's on the outside with the mesh on the inside or they will chew the frame.You make sure all the mesh edges are nipped between the frame.
Solid sides & back help too.

Pine is the wood I would use.  In my cage we have tile on the bottom where the shavings go.  We used wire mesh on the sides and pine for the shelfs.

if you want, go to the pet store and ask if you can see an assembled cage. ask about the material then go shop for it your self. take note of the bottom of the cage as it is really the most important. make sure their pellets can fall somewhere where they wont be walking all over it.

I have a custom built cage that the breeder had made... we bought it off of them and will be expanding it as well (its currently 2'x2'x3' and we would like it to be 2'x2'x5 for ours 2 girls). It's made of UNTREATED pine(frame, doors, and shelves), Melamine (sides, back, and bottom) and 1"x1/2" mesh in the doors. We has a metal pull out pan in it for the bedding.

We are going to make the new section an open side construction for better air flow with 1/4" mesh.
