I saw a patch of blood after my chin gave birth today
« on: April 17, 2010, 09:32:17 AM »

Hi,
My chinchilla gave birth this morning to one kit. I've separated both mum and kit from the dad.

The mum looks fine, but her bottom seems to be a bit damp. I just saw a patch of blood (bright red) on one of her wooden ledges.

I'm really worried as I don't know if this is normal. I've not given her any dust bath, so I'm not sure if this is an infection or not?

Please advice,
A really worried pet owner. :(

::silly::   Congratulations on the new kit!  Is this your first kit?

Do NOT give her a dust bath for at least 10 days ... she must have time to heal.

How log was it between the time you saw the bright red blood on the shelf and when she delivered the kit?

Have you seen any more?

Was it allot or just a spot or two?

Hi Jo Ann,
Thank you for your reply. I've been worried sick. :(
Yes indeed - my first kit! He (or she) is soooooooooo cute!!  :::grins::

I think it has been past 12 hours after she delivered the kit to when I saw the patch of blood... it could be more as I didn't get to witness the labor process. I've been checking up on her every now and then but I don't think I see anymore...
That patch of blood was about 2 inches long, and about 0.5 inch width... it looked kind of sticky to me.

Is this considered normal? I just can't stop worrying. :(

Thank you,
Eleni
