Because of the lack time I have, although I might have some this summer, I am starting to contemplate buying a new cage.  has anyone had any luck with best chinchilla cages?  This cage looks interesting, although I am still thinking about building one, I just need access to a metal brake and shear

wow thats a huge cage.. can i ask what something like that costs?

   The wiring on that cage is wrong for a chinchilla.  The wire on a cage for a chinchilla should be no larger than 1/2" x 1" ... it looks like about 1/2" in one direction, but the other direction is much to wide.   
Keep in mind that chinchillas tend to chew on everything they can get their little teeth into ... a painted cage allows the chin to "eat" the paint and will also make it look horrible in a short period of time.

You might try Martin's Cages (http://www.martinscages.com/products/cages/chinchilla/) and check out the ones under "chinchilla".  They come in a variation of sizes and prices.  I preferr the pull out trays, they are safer for the chin and more convient for cleaning.

Yah, I thought the wire size looked big.  I was hoping that it was 1/2 in both directions.  I might just have to wait a few months and build one from scratch.  I like the pull out trays as well.

   From experience ... Martin's cages are less expensive than making your own. 

The wire is not very expensive, but the tray usually has to be custom made and that is where your highest costs are. 

If you do decide to make it ... I strongly suggest stainless steel trays ... they last longest, are easiest to clean and look 300% better!  Regular steel trays rust easily ... aluminum is a soft metal and will be chewed/eaten by the chins ... again, from experience.

I was thinking about stainless steel wire for building it, but on the sides I was thinking about using L channel to provide some rigidity.  Steel has gotten a ton cheaper, I just need to find a spot welder for making the trays, although I could probably buy them somewhere

Well I got a great deal on a ferret nation double cage for $75.00  Going to modify it to a pull out pan and place some 1/2" wire
