sexing chinchillas
« on: April 04, 2010, 01:26:51 PM »

i've been looking and comparing to pictures online but am beginning to suspect my 'girl' chinchilla might be a boy.  i got her from a breeder (who ought to know?) when she was 3/4mths old and was told she was a girl.  now i've just got another female chinchilla she keeps trying to mount her! is this definite boy behaviour?  they have been getting on very well!

They may all mount each other at times. With same sex pairs it's to work out who is head of the heard. There can only be one boss. LOL

Both male and female have what it appears to be a penis...the best way to tell is to look at their "private area", and see if there is any seperation between the "penis" and the anus.  If there is no seperation you have a girl if there is a seperation you have a boy!

i've kept looking and comparing on the internet, one night i was up to 5am worrying about it.  see there's a small distance, not as big as some of the boys shown though.  anyway, i had a look again and saw that there was a 'split' down it which i think means is a female.  phew!
i just didn't want to have to take him/her to vet.  you know how they don't like to be moved!
