Hi everyone.
Just thought i'd drop a hello as a new member and introduce myself.  I'm a student at Virginia Tech originally out of Chesapeake, VA.  I'm the proud parent of my Vanilla (a standard grey) purchased from petsmart almost one month ago today.  She's been so great.  She's getting more and more acquainted with her home each day.  In fact, just last night she sat in my palm for a short period of time.  I haven't gotten her quite used to being petted or held yet, but it's something to work for.  She's very sociable and loves running around my room while my girlfriend and I lay on the floor with her.  Glad i finally found a forum to be able to talk and read up more about these wonderful creatures.
Here's a picture of her from the day we brought her home:

::silly::   Welcome to the Wonderful World of Chinchillas & to the Chinchilla Club Forum!

Now, please, take that poor baby out of the aquarium and get it a regular cage made of wire.  Aquariums do not allow enough natural airflow for a chinchilla and a fan would make him sick.    The fumes from his own urine will make him sick and cause him to have an infection in his lungs ... one that can easily kill him.

BTW  He sure is cute!!!   :::grins::

What's great about forums...is that the advice one gets from a pet store isn't always fact. In fact I've had some pretty off the wall statements to the point I stand there  ??? and think it would have been wiser for the employee of the pet store to not have said anything if they didn't know the answer.

I am learning things as well as to the "what not to do" things...It's a learning experiance...Congrats on the new chin! Definately a cutie...

Don't worry Jo Ann, she's not in an aquarium.  That was just an image of her climbing on a shelf in my room from the first day we got her.  She has a proper wire cage complete with 3 shelves, a house, cooling pad, dust bath, etc.  Her cage is cleaned regularly and she gets to play every night for a few hours inside my room.
