How safe is it?
« on: November 04, 2008, 07:45:16 AM »

How safe is it to leave the female and the male in together when she is due? I know i've seen pictures of mommy and daddy chins taking care of the kit but was wondering if there are things i should know before i decide to do that .

The male should be removed before birth or time you notice that your female is in labor.  The male will try (and can) mate with the female again time she is finished giving birth.  This isn't good!  This is called a breedback.

There should be at least 10 days separation time...I believe.  I am sure someone else can verify this for you.

Good luck!

Its really a personal choice.  I have had several pairs that I left together forever.  Usually the dad is a great father and will help care for the babies.  Keep track of the date and if your female has another litter within 4 months you should take dad out then to give her a rest.  One breedback won't hurt  a healthy female on good feed, but continuous ones will.

Hopefully your pair will be like mine and naturally space out their litters in a more healthy way.  You want mom to have some rest between pregnancies.

If you do remove Dad keep his cage close to hers and watch his food intake.  Males can become depressed and stop eating when removed from the female.
