pets that can live with chins
« on: July 07, 2008, 12:09:35 PM »

ive read that rabbits can live with chinchillas. can rats? my friend is expecting a litter of rats.  how in the world would i feed companion animals there specialized food!? i have 3 ladies in my spacious cage right now. they met a baby bunny once and loved it all up and groomed it immediately.

from what i understand a chin can't be with a rabbit or a rat. a rabbit could accidentally break it's neck with its strong hind legs. a rat can bite or scratch and it can become infected and possibly fatal. on the flip side a chin has the ability to fatally bite or scratch another animal. it would be best to leave them seperate

It's not worth the risk.
My rabbit only meets the chinchillas if they are in their cage, his back legs are so strong they could, as sashasmommy said, break a chinchillas neck or back with a single kick, and rabbits flick their feet when they're happy or scared or anything. Plus you can never be sure what deseases other animals can give to chinchillas. We just don't know enough about them yet.

Once I saw a chinchilla living in one cage with a rat and they seemed ok  :) although i think it's  a bad idea to keep different species in one cage

I have many many rats . One chinnie . They live in the same house but not the same cage . Rats are far more different than chins . I do however recommend rats as pets . They are the greatest little guys next to chinnies .

Rats and Chins...Same house and same room is okay...not so much same cage.

A friend of mine has rats and chins...she keeps all her rats in one room and her chins in another room. But she has lots of rats and lots of chins. She's got a rescue so yeah.
