Made my first sale!
« on: December 02, 2007, 04:59:52 PM »

Well....I am officially in the business!  I sold my first two chinchillas yesterday.  I have been breeding for a couple of years now, but haven't sold any.  I really haven't tried to sell any of my kits.  But it is about time (I have 28)!

A very nice lady bought Sandy (beige) and Sandy (Standard), sisters.  They will be a Christmas gift for her daughter.  She seemed very informed on the taking care of chinchillas.  She has been doing research on how to take care of chinchillas and her daughter has done school reports on chinchillas in the wild and having them as pets.  So I feel comfortable with seeing them go to a good home.

But selling chinchillas is a whole different ball game from breeding and showing!

Any advice would be appreciated!!  Thanks~!   ::nod::

It's great she did research. That's what you want to hear.

The biggest thing I look for in a potential buyer is whether they are willing to listen and learn about the animal.  I have had people who came in and didn't want to hear anything I had to tell them, even if they hadn't owned chins before.  One couple only wanted to know what colors a chin could produce in breeding, and were planning on breeding to a pet store chin!  When I said I highly recommended against that and began to explain why, the woman actually left and went and sat in her car for the rest of the visit!  Needless to say, they didn't go home with one of my babies.

Their names are Sandy and Sandy?  That must be...confusing...   rofl

Congratulations!  It is very difficult to sell chinchillas.  Finding good buyers isn't as easy as you'd think...  But it sounds like you found a fantastic forever home for your babies!   ::silly::

It isn't confusing telling them apart because, eventhough, they are sisters....they are different colors.  Sandy is beige (like sand) and Sally is standard.
I do have two standard brothers that I can't tell apart!  The only difference in them is that one always talks to me when I come into the chinchilla room and the other doesn't make a sound.

OH!  Sandy and SALLY!  In your original post, you said Sandy and Sandy...  It wasn't that I thought they would confuse them, as I knew they were different colors.  It was that I thought, "How confusing to the chinchillas, to both be called Sandy."   ;D

I make phone calls after the sale, one in 2 days and another at 2 weeks.
Make them feel comfy in calling or emailing with any problems. They can't get that from a pet shop, and sometimes it means so much to them to know they are not left in a lurch should a problem arise.
I tell them they will always be my baby's and they can count on me to be there when needed.
Most times it's silly things like" he's laying on his side and looks dead, but when I wtouch him he jumps up and looks at me like I'm nuts."
Just be there for them. ::nod::

When I sold my first kit, I almost cried, lol. I didn't think I was attached but I guess I was. I'm hoping it'll get easier as time goes on.

Congrats!  :::grins::  I cry every time one goes to their new home. I get to know the buyer either by email, phone or in person. In fact I am friends with most of them now because of the chins.
