Huggable Pets Farm Chinchillas
Make it yourself

As owners of over 40 chinchillas we learned long ago that we would have to improvise to be able to provide our chins with everything we wanted for them. Through trial and error and sometimes quite by accident we have come up with some great chinchilla items from some pretty unlikely places.
The best chinchilla toys might be lurking in your local home improvement store. Large pieces of PVC or clay pipe will make a wonderful hide away for your furry little friend. Ceramic tiles (straight from the fridge) are also great to place in the cage on a hot day. Find the ones that have been chipped and you might even get a discount! Most home improvement stores will cut lumber on the spot. As a result they may have some scrap pieces lying around. Chunks of the untreated pine boards are great chew toys and are usually very cheap.

Glass water bottles are a must if your chinchilla is a chewer. When we were first starting out we had plastic water bottles and within the first week most had holes. Soon we realized that the basic water bottle nozzle will screw right onto a 20 oz Coke bottle. We though this was a great find. I am a big coke drinker so we were set. Every few days a water bottle would spring a leak and we would just reach into the recycling bin for the next one. One day I was in a gas station looking for my usual coke when I noticed the Yoohoo bottle right beside it. Glass container, same screw on top....I brought it home and sure enough, the water bottle nozzle fit right onto the Yoohoo bottle. “YOO-HOO!!!” No more chewed up water bottles in our house.

Some of the great play toys are right in your own backyard, or even your outhouse. :) Toilet paper rolls are great toys. If your chinchilla loves to eat the roll then save this for a special treat every few weeks. A little bit of cardboard won’t hurt, but you don’t want your little guy eating roll after roll. Apple tree branches are great for hours of chewing excitement. If you or a neighbor have apple trees you are in luck. Just make sure the owner doesn’t use insecticides.

Have you discovered some great chinchilla toys in unusual places? If you would like to share your chinchilla tips and tricks send them to CCQ@chinclub.net. We will include some of them in the next addition of the Chinchilla Club Quarterly.
