Baby Hunt

by Ryan Pritt
Ryan's Chinchillas

For a year I have had chinchillas. The total rose to 5 in May. They were all adults. I had hoped, but none of my chinchillas ever had had babies. That changed quickly thanks to Cuddles On Saturday, August 4th I had been gone all day. Before I went to bed I went to give Cuddles a raisin. When she stood up I noticed she had dried blood on her. We had a hunch but did not know she was pregnant for sure. We read numerous books, emailed Chinmail and asked them what they thought I should do. They all said to search the house for babies. At about 2:00am we picked up a hat and a baby fell out! We immediately put Cuddles and her baby in their own cage. The next morning we heard a noise in my parents' room. We searched everywhere. Then inside their TV stand we saw another one! We had found both of Cuddles babies! They escaped because the wire in their cage was 1" by 2". Since we had never had babies before we were not aware that they could escape. It was a long and exhausting search but luckily we found both babies safe and sound. They are now older and much more daring. The smaller one that we found in the hat is a boy, while the other is a girl. They are all doing well and are very friendly.
