Chico Scares Away a Burglar

One Friday night last year during winter we were asleep when suddenly our male chinchilla Chico made his alarm call. It is not unusual for him to make this sound in the evening or at night when he hears something that sounds suspicious to him. I always go and check on him and talk to him in a calm, soothing voice. This time however, it sounded differently. More persistent, as if he really tried to warn us that something was wrong. Minnie and Darling sat still in the cage next door and even the guinea pigs, who usually don't care about Chico's calling, were quiet. Hence, we instinctively knew something was wrong. My hubby heard something outside and decided to turn on the lights in the garden and have a look. The lights must have scared the burglar whose only intention was to leave the premises as swift as possible that he left wide open the garden gate. Needless to say that our furry hero was rewarded with a big juicy raisin and praised for his being so alert and being better than a guard dog. Who could ever think that a small animal like a chinchilla would scare away a burglar? We are very proud of our little guy who protects our home against people with malignant intentions.
