A New Home

Chapter 1: The Pet Store

The little chinchilla sat in his cage in the back of the pet store. He listened to the squawking birds and the barking dogs. He watched the people come in and out buying new pets. No one even looked his way. He had overheard the bunnies saying that when an animal got chosen it went to a new home and got lots of love. The chinchilla wanted a family.

One day the pet store owner took the chinchilla's cage and placed it at the front of the store. This was his chance to find a new owner. He had to do his best!

Chapter 2: My First Hour, the First Day Up Front

Great! The manager is opening the door and there are people outside. Here they come!

Let's see ... should I curl up in a big furry ball, to show I am very quiet and well mannered? Or should I stand up tall and give them my 'I wanna go home with you' look? Or should I jump around from floor to shelf to show them how healthy I am? What should I do?

Oh! Oh! Here comes a pretty little girl. Yes! She is comming to see me. She is smiling at me and looks very friendly. I'll run to the front of the cage to let her feel how soft my fur is. Oooo, she's rubbing my tummy with her finger. It feels so good! I like her!

Here comes her Mommy. Maybe they will take me home. "No, no, he might bite you!" she said. "See the sign on the cage! It says 'Do not put your fingers inside the cage. Chinchillas bite!'"

"But he didn't bite me, Mommy. He likes me." said the pretty little girl, "And he is so soft!"

"Let's go look at the kittens." said her Mom.

So the pretty little girl had to leave, I wouldn't bite her. She was nice and I liked her! Oh, no, she's crying ... the kitten scratched her! I wouldn't do that! Now they are leaving the store! Maybe they'll come back tomorrow.

Oh, here comes another little girl. I'll let her rub me, her Mom's not watching.

"Hey! Stop that, quit pulling my whiskers! That hurts! Ouch! Don't pinch my paw! That hurts, too." She won't turn it loose ..... I warned her! ..... Chomp! ..... Oops! Now I know why the sign is there. :( But it was her fault!

The store has been open only one hour and I think I'm in trouble already!

Chapter 3: Witness

Oh, no! They say they are going to have to put me in the back again! I don't want to go! It's not fair! She was hurting me!

Who's that? He seems very nice, he's not afraid of me, and he's an adult. He has his finger in the cage and wants me to come over. Is he going to hurt me or be nice? I don't know what to do. I'm afraid. Maybe, he just wants to make friends.

"Sir, please do not put your finger in the cage. There is a sign there that says it will bite and that chinchilla just bit a little girl." said the manager. The little chinchilla knew the manager was mad at him.

"Yes, he did bite her, but she was hurting him. I saw it all." said the nice man.

"Oh. I guess I miss judged the little critter." the manager said with a smile.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! I must let you know I am really nice! He's scratching me under the chin and behind my ears. That feels good. I want him to hold me. So the little chin jumped up on the nice man's hand when he opened the door and snuggled under his chin when the man held him close to his face.

"I think I am going to have to take you home with me. I have a little girl that would like to have you for her friend. You probably don't understand, but she saw you earlier today and cried all the way home. My wife called me and ask me to come see you and see what I thought. I think you are going to be perfect for my daughter!"

I'm going to get a home! Oh, boy! And if the bunnies were right (and I think they were) lots and lots of love! Great, he's picking out a new cage for me and giving the cashier some money. Now I get have a family and a home of my own!

Hey! Wait! Were are you going? Why are you leaving? Come back, please. I will be nice, I promise. He is driving off. I thought he was going to take me home.

Hold it, what's going on, why are you taking me to the back again? He told me he was going to take me home! I don't want to go back there again. When the dogs bark they hurt my ears and nobody even knows I am here when I am back there! Please, I will be good. Let me go back up front. I don't understand.

"Well, little one, you're going to have a new home by this evening. That nice man is going to pick you up on his way home from work." said the manager, as he sat the little chin down.

Yes! Yes! Yes! He is comming back to get me and I get to see the nice little girl agin! I can't wait till this evening. Wonder how long that is from now?

Chapter 4: A Long Day

Now is my normal bed time. I usually like to sleep right now, but I just can't sleep ... to many things to think about.

Wonder what my new home will be like?
Will there be other animals there?
Will I have lots of room to run and play?
I wonder (yawn) what it will be like? (yawn)
Humm, I wonder ... (yawn).....

The little chin fell fast asleep. As he slept he begain to dream ... dream of what he hoped it was going to be like in his new home.

There would be the smell of fresh pine chips and fresh Timothy hay ~ he could nibble away at it, roll in it and even sleep in it! :)

No barking dogs or swaking birds ~ just soft music to listen to.

A brand new hut all his own ~ one that no one had used before! And a bath, a dust bath, fresh and clean, just for him.

He would have his cage door open all the time, so he could run and play hide and seak and not get fussed at for getting loose.
(Dream on little chin, not ALL dreams come true!)

He would have someone to play with him and talk to him. (This is getting back to reality.) Someone who would love him , someone he could give his love to. Humm, it was going to be sooooooooo nice!

As he continued to dream of his dream home, the time went quickly by, soon it would be time to meet his new family.

Finally it was early evening. Time for him to be picked-up. Time to go to his new home!

Was his new home going to be as he dreamed it?

Chapter 5: A name to call my own.

I was awoken with a stir to the sound of my cage door opening.
I was still a little dopey and though happy, I couldn't quite remember why. Until, I heard the gentle voice of an older man speaking to me.
"Sorry we're late little guy, Jenny just had to come with us to pick you up!"
I poked my head out of my sleeping box and looked up, to see the smiling face of that beautiful little girl who was here earlier.
She had a bandage over the kitten scratch and he face was glowing with the biggest smile I had seen since the day Glow the Guinea pigs owner picked him up.
The little girl bent down and leant toward the cage, reaching her hand in for me, as she did she spoke to me in almost a whisper.
"Hi, I'm Jenny. I saw you here earlier today and I had to have you. Mommy said I could put your cage in my room if you promise not to keep me up all night, and I even picked out your new name! I do hope you like it..."
A name? My very own name?
Wow! I climbed onto Jenny's hand and she slowly lifted me out of my cage and pressed me against her chest. I don't know whos heart was pounding faster, hers or mine. She gently rubbed me between my ears and my eyes closed in utter joy.
Jenny's Dad had gone to the pet shop owner to get a carry cage for me.
"Look Daddy," Jenny exclaimed in a hushed tone "Mr. Fluffy is sleeping!"
Mr. Fluffy? Wow I feel important. That's such a big name, Jenny must really think I'm special.
Jenny's Daddy took me and put me in the carrier, which I really didn't like much, because it was rather dark, and nowhere near as comfortable as Jenny's arms.
The car ride was quite bumpy and Jenny kept peeking in my box. The whole ride home she was singing.
I felt an overwhelming sense of comfort and secrutiy and I couldn't wait to get home.
Home... What a wonderful word.
I could harldy wait to see my new cage and my new room, though I couldn't promise I wouldn't keep Jenny awake, I was sure gunna try!

Chapter 6: Home Sweet Home

I snuggled up in the corner of the dark carrier, my stomach feeling a little queasy not only from the movement but also from the excitement I was feeling. Then the movement stopped and Jenny picked up my carrier and got out of the car.
I crept towards the front, eager to see my new home - a beautiful white house with a well manicured lawn and sprawling gardens, I had never seen such a wonderful sight, it was far above anything I had anticipated.

WOW what a wonderful home to live in! If the outside is like this I can hardly wait to see my new cage! The carrier swung from side to side as I watched and waited, anticipating what was to come. Jenny opened the door to the front of this castle, and stepped inside. I looked out through the wire at what was before me. I saw the floor (nice wood for nibbling I noted).

I eagerly waited to see what more was to come. The carrier suddenly stopped moving, and I heard Jenny exclaim, "Well, welcome to your new home, Mr Fluffy!"

She opened the carrier door, and reached in to pull me out I was quivering with excitement. Everything was suddenly so bright. I looked around in wonder, as Jenny snuggled me and carried me into another room, I snuggled under her chin feeling so safe. I looked around at more of the nice floors, and the wonderful looking wood skirting boards (how will I resist chewing them! yummmm) … and there in the corner stood my new home, mine and no one else’s. Jenny carried me over, opened the door and gently placed me inside.

I looked up at her once, and turned around to stare at what was around me. I bounced over to the corners of the cage, and sniffed, looked up at the wonderful wooden house for me, and looked at the huge wheel on the side of the cage. I jumped up on one of the shelves, and saw a huge bowl sitting there.

Pellets filled to the brim, a quick taste of them was the only time I could spare, I had to explore this wonderful new place! I looked over at the shelf across from the bowl and hopped on to it, looking at the huge wheel that was just below it.

I really wanted to try that wheel so I put my paws on the top, and moved the wheel towards me trying to get hold of it, instead, the wheel slipped under my paws. I saw the roof of the cage, and then...THUD! I hit the bottom floor.

"Silly chin! That isn't how you run on the wheel" Jenny laughed, as she picked me up and placed me inside the wheel.

I started running on the wheel, and felt so confident. I loved my new home! I poked my head out to look at Jenny. Without watching my paws, I slipped and tumbled out. "Oh, you are one little goof, Mr. Fluffy. Mr. Fluffy....." Jenny’s voice trailed off and she stared at me a long time. "You know, that name just doesn't fit such a cute chin as you...."

I wondered what she was thinking, but continued my exploring, I jumped onto the one shelf, then the next, looking at the neat hayrack, filled with hay. I plucked a few pieces from it, and chewed. So dry and crispy!

What a wonderful treat! I am going to love my new home so much more than the pet store! I threw down the piece I was chewing, and jumped onto the last shelf.

The sleeping box was right there! I ran inside and sniffed around, how nice and dark it was. Perfect to sleep in during the day. I went back outside to thank Jenny for my wonderful new home.

Without thinking, my paw hit thin air, and I fell, all the way to the bottom of the cage. OUCH! Did that hurt or what?

Jenny giggled and pulled me out of the cage. "Oh you poor little thing! I hope you are okay!" She held me in her hands and checked me over. I moved a bit to let her know I was okay. Nothing was hurting. Honest!

Chapter 7: Settling In

She held me close to her again and rubbed her face in my fur – I could feel her warm breath, it felt nice, and I felt so safe. I had snuggled up under her chin again when she spoke softly to me "I think I found the perfect name for you my little critter - you are so clumsy and sweet” Jenny smiled, "how does Jinx sound to you? Jinx ... Jinx … Jinx” she repeated quietly trying my new name out. I snuggled closer to her thinking that it was a lovely name, short and sweet. My eyes closed, I felt so tired I just had to sleep and this felt like the perfect place to rest my head.

I must have been asleep for hours when I heard a noise outside my cage. Jenny was there and whispering “Jinx” over and over. I opened my eyes and stretched out – ohhh that felt good. Jenny must have put me in my little house when I fell asleep, I had almost not realised where I was! Sleepily I stumbled out of my house, I needed a drink, now where was that bottle I had spotted earlier? Oh there it is .. mmm that tastes good. Hungry now, ohh those pellets taste so good, not stale like those in the pet shop. That must have been the best sleep I had ever had – no noise around me, so quiet and peaceful, and no rude awakenings.

Jenny called my name again so I went to see what she wanted. She opened the door and let me out – wow! To be allowed out alone! I slowly climbed out of the cage, looking around in wonder at the place I had so briefly glimpsed on the way in. I could smell no other animals .. that’s good. Feeling rather apprehensive I ventured further out into the room, Jenny sat and watched me. I started feeling a little more confident and ran a bit … woooahh – I stopped sharp but I carried on moving, sliding along the slippery wooden floor, crashing into a table leg! I picked myself up and glared at the leg, how dare it get in my way! I sniffed it closely, smells good, wonder what it tastes like, I gave the leg a little nibble, nah, that wood isn’t too tasty.

Looking around again I saw a pile of things that looked promising. I ran over to them, sniffing about, wondering if there was anything tasty there – I could certainly smell something nice. Ahhh, there it is .. don’t know what it is but I’ll try it !!! mmm now that tastes good! I jumped as Jenny came up to me “what have you found Jinx?”, I carried on eating it and heard her chuckle and call out “MUM! MUM! Look what Jinx has found, a raisin, he loves it!” Footsteps approached and I saw Jenny’s mummy coming, she smiled “oh little Nairn must have dropped it when I gave him some yesterday, but it’s OK the book says chins are allowed a raisin or two each day”. I gingerly ventured towards Mum, she had nice smells on her. Her feet, mmmm, yes they smell good, it must be the shoes she has on – wonder what they taste like, nice texture! A loud noise made me jump and I ran under the nearest piece of furniture and peeked out. I could see a little boy tottering towards Mum, that must be Nairn. She bent down and picked him up telling him to ‘shhh’ and pointing towards me.

Jenny came over to me and tapped her fingers on the floor gently, I went to her and she gently picked me up. Oh she is lovely to cuddle up to. She carried me over to Mum and Nairn saying “Nairn, this is my chinchilla, Jinx. Can you say Jinx?” The little boy tried, said something that sounded like Jinx and reached out to touch me. I tensed up, remembering the hurt that girl in the pet shop had caused when she pulled my whiskers “Gently” said Mum. Nairn stroked me so gently it felt like a butterfly on my back. I relaxed a little more, these people was not going to hurt me, they were nice and were going to be my family from now on. How had I been so lucky and got such a wonderful home after so many months in that pet shop. Oh I am so lucky…

Chapter 8: Play Time!!!

Jenny's laying on the floor. Goodie! Now I can be almost as big as she is. Snif, snif ... What's that thing?

"Be careful, Jenny. I still am not to sure of him. Maybe, you shouldn't have him go close to your face, especially around your eyes." Mum said.

"He just wants to meet me and see what I look like up close, Mum." replied Jenny.

Oh, that's what it's called ~ eyes. It's pretty and blue, just like the sky, and there's two of them!

He-he-he ~ she's sniffing of me! She knows how to say "Hello" like chins do! Maybe she's just a big chin! Just not as much fur! Her fur is all in one place,and it's all on her head! It's a lot longer than my fur, but mine is softer! Maybe if I groom it for her it will be as soft as mine!

"Mum, Mum, look ~ he's combing my hair!"

"Why, yes he is. Maybe he knows it will be your bedtime in an hour and is trying to help you get ready for bed."

"But, Mum, can't I stay up. Just a little longer tonight? He'll get lonesome if I don't play with him."

"OK, but only 30 minutes extra. I guess this is a special night. Your first chin."

Her first chin? Oh boy! Does that mean she will get another chin for me to play with while she is sleeping? Wait a minute! That would mean she wouldn't have as much time for me! I'd have to share her. I don't want to share her! She's MY Jenny!

With this thought, he snuggled even closer to Jenny. Jenny scratched under his chin and behind his ears. It felt so good! He-he-he! That tickles! I never knew someone could tickle me by touching my whiskers!

"Oh, sorry, Mr Fluffy. Oops! I mean Jix. I didn't mean to tickle you."

Chapter 9: Bedtime for Jenny

"Jenny, it's bedtime!"

"But, Mum, just a few more minutes, please."

"Jenny, you've already had an extra thirty minutes. Now it is time for bed. You need your rest for school tomorrow. I hope Jinx will be a quiet little chin so he can stay in your room."

Oh, I hope I can be quiet! But this is my regular play time. I'll have to play quietly, so I can stay in Jenny's room. I hope I can. That, I think, will not be an easy thing to do.

"Hehehe ~ That tickles, Jenny! When you touch my whiskers! Hehehe"

"Night kiss, please, Jinx." said Jenny as she bent forward to give Jinx his first of many more good night kisses. "Hehehe, Jinx, your whiskers tickled my nose! Oh I can't wait till tomorrow, I'm going to tell my best friends at school about how wonderful you are! And maybe Mum will let me take you for 'Show & Tell' one day!"

I wish we could play longer, but Jenny has to get her rest, can't have her falling asleep at school! I hope I can play quietly.
But that is going to be hard to do, I think.

I can eat and drink some of my water, that won't make noise.

With that thought, Jinx hopped up on the side of his bowl. "Whooa." The bowl tpped over with a bang!

"What happened, Jinx? Are you OK?" Jenny ask, as she rubbed her eyes.

Jenny, Jenny back to bed! Mum will get mad at me for waking you! She'll move me to another room!

"Lights out, Jenny." Mum called from the other room.

"Yes-uhm." Jenny called back.

"Good night, again.", Jenny whispered to Jinx as she crawled back into bed.

This being quiet was not going to be as easy as I thought it would be thought Jinx.

Chapter 10: An exciting day at School

Jenny quickly pecked her mother on the cheek and ran out to meet the school bus.

The bus arrived at it's usual time and Jenny climbed on, but her best friend Becky was not in her usual seat, instead a tall skinny girl with pigtails and freckles sat in her place. Jenny looked around the bus but all the seats were taken. She reluctantly sat down next to the new girl.
"Hello my name is Kara." The new girl said with a large toothy smile.
"Hi Kara, I'm Jenny." Jenny replied with a half smile, still rather disressed at where Becky was.
The two girls were silent for a moment, and Jenny rustled some papers she was holding.
Kara noticed the papers and her face immediately went into a huge smile.
"Is that a picture of a chinchilla?" she asked excitedly.
Jenny Nodded. "Yes this is my new pet, his name is Jinx."
"WOW" Kara responded. "What a great name for a chinchilla! We have 2 chinchillas at home, they are a couple, a girl and a boy, Komo and Kiki. They are going to have a baby very soon, I am soo excited."
Jenny's mouth drop in excitment "Really? Wow that is so cool! I have never met anyone with chinchillas before, and they are going to have babies too?"
"Yep." Kara replied.
Jenny felt much more comfortable with this new girl now, and thoughts of Becky were washed from her mind as she took in all this chinnie talk.
Kara looked out the window and then Back to Jenny.
"Do you know any good chinchilla names? Mom says I should start thinking about it now, for when the babies are born."
Jenny thought for a moment and the nodded. "yes, yes I do.. When we got Jinx, I had named him Mr. Fluffy, but after watching him for awhile, the name Jinx came to me, so after talking with my mom, we went with Jinx. But I still think Mr. Fluffy is a GREAT name!"
Kara nodded "Yes I agree, that is a fantastic name." she thought for a moment.
"Jenny, do you think, that if my chinchillas have a baby boy, that you would like to have him? Then you could name him Mr. Fluffy and Jinx would have a buddy! Mom says I must find good homes for the babies now."
Jenny nodded her head enthusiastically
"YES! I will ask Mommy when I get home today!"
The school bus came to a stop.
Kara and Jenny got out of their seat, Jenny took Karas hand and they skipped off the bus.
Jenny was sure mom would say yes, since they had just talked about getting Jinx a friend last night, and since the babies wouldn't come for awhile, She knew she could prove she was a good chinnie mommy by time the babies were ready to go to new homes.
Jenny and Kara skipped into the classroom, just in time for the bell to ring.

Chapter 11: New Friends!

After school, Jenny met Kara again on the bus. They found that they lived fairly close and Kara got off at the next stop. Kara and Jenny made plans to meet up after they finish their homework.

Jenny rushes home to do her homework, and excitedly tells her mom about her new friend. "Mom, please can I go over to Kara's house and see her chinchillas?" she asks. "Sure", her mom says, "as soon as your homework is done."

Before Jenny starts her homework, she has to check and see how Jinx is doing. Jenny goes up to the cage, and Jinx hears her and wakes up to come and say hello. He is so glad she is home. Jenny opens the cage door, gives him a scatch behind the ears, and a small piece of papaya, then lets Jinx go back to sleep.

Jenny rushes to finish her homework, then tears out the door and runs to Kara's house. Jenny knocks on the door, and Kara's mom greets her, "hello, you must be Jenny, Kara has told me all about you." Jenny goes inside the house, and there are boxes all around. Kara's mom appologizes, saying that they have just moved into the neighbourhood and are still unpacking, but is so happy that Kara has already made a friend at school.

Suddenly Kara appears, so happy to see Jenny there. Kara asks Jenny, "do you want to come and see my chins now?" Jenny could hardly contain her excitement, "yes, kara, I would love to see them." So the two girls go upstairs to one of the rooms. Kara explains to Jenny that this house is much larger than the last house they were in, and now the chins can have their own room.

When they enter the room, suddenly two chins jump up and run to the cage door, happy to see Kara and her new friend. When Jenny saw the chins, her jaw dropped open, she had never seen such beautiful chins before. These chins were not average, but were pitch black from head to toe and very, very shiney.

Jenny tells Kara that the chins are very beautiful, and Kara tells Jenny that they are homo ebony.

Jenny looked at momma chin, and saw that she had a very round belly, so she decided to ask Kara when the babies were going to arrive. Kara said, "well, they are due any day now, sometime between now and next Friday." Jenny's excitement was too much now, oh, she just had to see these babies.

Kara asks Jenny what colour Jinx is. Jenny says, "well, they said at the pet store that he was a beige." "Maybe sometime you can come over and see him", Jenny suggests. Kara knew she just had to meet Jinx.

Chapter 12: The birth of Mr.Fluffy

3 days went by and Kara and Jenny were inseperable, it turned out that Becky had moved with her family, and she called Jenny to tell her they'd stay in touch.
On the third night, Jenny was getting ready for bed when the phone rang, she could hear her mother speaking downstairs. 5 minutes later her mother called up to her "Jenny get dressed again, there is a surprise."
Jenny quickly reclothed and ran down the stairs, her and her mother climbed in the car, and drove to Kara's house. Kara was in her jammies already and was sitting in front of the chinnie cage. Mom stayed downtairs and talked with Karas mom, Jenny ran up to the chinnie room, she sat down beside Kara and looked in the cae to see one tiny little black baby chin sitting on the floor, and the mother chinnie was working hard to get the next out.
Jenny's eyes were huge as her and Kara watched in silence.
After an hour, Mommy chin had given birth to three beautiful baby chins.
One of the babies had a tiny white spot under one of its eyes, which Karas mother said she had never seen anything like it before.
The girls chatted for what felt like ever before Jenny's mom called her to go home.
Kara looked at her mother and her mother nodded at her...
"Jenny would you like to have the little black chin with the white spot? You're mom has said it's ok!"
Jennyt jumped up and down excitedly and hugged her mother, then Kara tight.
"Thank you so much!" jenny replied.
"Mom, I know you think Mr. Fluffy is a babyish name, but I am kinda of fond of it, would it be ok if I called him Mr. Fleck Fluffy, and then called him Fleck for short?"
Jenny's mom nodded, "Yes Jenny as long as you stick to the name you choose, that is fine."
Kara cleared her throat "Jenny, Mr. Fluffy is a misses!"
Jenny looked at her mother, and her mother smiled. "Yes Jenny we will have to get her a sperate cage until She is old enough to share a cage with Jinx."
Jenny thought for a moment.
"Alright then, It will be,Shady, her name will be Shady."
Everyone nodded, agreeing that was a great name.
Jenny and her mom turned to leave, when Kara called out Jenny's name.
"Jenny, would it be ok if I called the little boy baby that I'm keeping, Mr.Fluffy?"
Jenny nodded happily, "That would be VERY ok Kara, Goodnight!"

Chapter 14: You've Got Mail

Jenny was up early. It was Saturday morning, but she wanted to visit with Jinx and tell him about the beautiful ebony female that would soon come to stay.

Just as Jenny started to tell Jinx about Shady she heard "You've Got Mail".

She decided not to check it out until after she talked to Jinx, but her Mum ask who the e-mail was from. "I haven't checked, Mum. I'm going to tell Jinx about Shady first."

"But, don't you think you need to at least check to see who it is from?", ask Mum.

"Yes, mam." replied Jenny, with some reserve.

Logging on, Jenny saw it was an e-mail from Becky!

Hi! Becky! Guess what?!?! Mum and Dad got me a little chinchilla! He's beige and his name is Jinx! And I met the new girl in my class ~ her name is Kara and she has 2 chinchillas! OOPS! I mean 5 chinchillas!
They are ebony chins!! All of them are black as black can be and sooooooooo soft! I got to see the three kits be born (UCKY! But it was so beautiful, too.) The Momma and Daddy chin are named Komo & Kiki (sounds Hawaiian names) and the babies (kits) are not all named yet. But, two of them are! The little girl chin, has a white dot below her eye and her name is Shady. And what is even better, is, I get to keep her!!! Well, not yet, I have to wait till she is 8 weeks old before I get to bring her home! Oh I'm so excited, I can't wait. =-)

Oh, yea! One of them is a boy kit ~ Kara is going to keep him ~ and she even ask if I would mind if she called him Mr. Fluffy, because he is so fluffy and soft (that's what I almost named Jinx) I told her that would be great! The third chin is another baby girl chin! She doesn't have a name yet ~ her Mum said we couldn't give her a permanet name yet, because who ever gets her will want to pick out her name ~ that will be in 8 weeks ~ about the first part of February. That's when I get to bring Shady home!!!
Gotta go now ~ it's time to feed Jinx!
