Laya is hurt!!
« on: January 17, 2007, 01:57:49 PM »

Laya finally let me hold her! She was the one who wouldn't let any one hold or go in to her cage. But I found what was her fur kind of coming out but not. When I looked closer it was sacbed over with the fur. I pulled some of it off, It looks like it is almost healed. I made an appointment at the vet for this after noon. She has been eat, drinking and pooping normal. I don't know what would have happed.

Is it a cut/wound or could it be fungus?
Are they blood scabs, or do they look fleshy and pale?
Can't wait to hear what the vet says, doesn't sound like she's sick.
Is she alone, did she have a fight with another?
Poor baby, I'm sure she'll be fine, big hugs for Laya. ::KissKissBig::

It is a cut/wound.It was blood scabs at one time. The around it is nice and pink. She has been with a male (Ping) for about three weeks and are great friends and before that they were cage to cage. They have never had any tiff that I have ever seen. She is the one in charge. I am so worried.  ::scaredspeachless:: Thank You I am sure she will be fine too.

OK, She cleaned the wound all off and pulled off the matted fur with scab on it. It is helling just fine. It had been there at lest four days or so. I have to her back in a few day for a recheck.Still not sure how it happed yet. I am so glad that she is OK. But I fell like a bad chin mommy for not seeing it before.

I forgot to add that she is now in a cage by herself and has a coller thing on her.

I'm glad she's doing okay!
I bet she hates her collar though.  :::grins::

I'm so glad to hear she's OK too.
Amazing what they can get into.
Don't be to hard on yourself, hard to see through all that fur.
I wish I had time to check all mine from head to toe every day, but I don't.
One nip from another chin can do a fare amount of damage.
I showed a female a kit one time, and she chomped into his head and scalped him.
They can shimmy behind things and scrape themselves, or maybe something else in the cage is just stuck out a tad.
Is she chewing at it? I guess that's why she's wearing the collar. I hope she's not too upset.
The collar , new cage, and visit to the vet would be enough to upset me let alone a little chinchilla. ;)

The collar is just there to keep her from doing that. But so was freaked out. Ping crys for her and she spayed me this morning. I don't balm her. I took her away from Ping, the vet did all this mean stuff to her and she has this thing on her neck. I would be mad too!  :flames:

::silly::I know I would not be happy with a collar on.    >:(
But, sometimes you have to do things they don't like to get/keep them well.   :blush2:

Any time there is an open wound, you have to remove the scab and the fur matted over it ... easiest done with triple anti biotic ointment and a warm moist cloth, to soften the scab for easy, almost painless removal of the scab.  Then it needs to be flushed several times a day with a water/iodine solution (it should look like weak tea).  Flushing it with this solution helps to dilute (get rid of) the infection and germs.  But, only with the OK from your vet first.

Yep that is what the vet did. Laya didn't make a sound, But I had tears in my eye's. She kept reassuring me that she was fine and to worry to much about her. I take her back tommow for recheck. Laya is going to be :flames: at me,but oh well.

Tough love.  ::shrug::
But you can win her trust back when she's well again and I'm sure she'll love you all the more for it.  :::grins::

::silly:: I think chins are much smarter than we give them credit ...
More than likely, Laya knows you are helping her get better.
I don't think she will stay upset long ...
I think they know when you are doing what is best for them.   ::nod::

Yes, we don't give them enough credit.  ::nod::  Laya has NEVER let me hold her until now. The vet said it at one point had been mastitis and that had been for some time. The matted fur was stoping the from healing. But the good news is that healing really good.  ::nod:: She has not lost any weight, in fact she gained 8 grams.  ::think::
