Chinchilla doesn't run around much at playtime
« on: June 14, 2015, 12:07:03 PM »

i let my chin Gonzo out for playtime every day or every 2 days for about 2-3 hours but all he does is sit there not doing anything. I lay out lots of toys and its a pretty big room, quiet with just him and I in there but he doesn't seem to play or run much

When you mean sit there and do nothing does he hide under something or actually sit there and do nothing?

That's not too abnormal. Are you doing this in the day or after sundown? Chinchillas seem to be active mostly at night. Not all chinchillas are going to roam around just because you let them out of the cage. My grey chin will go somewhere and hide but my white chin, who is much younger, will roam around.
If you let a chinchilla loose in the middle of the room and it doesn't try to find a dark place to hide there probably something wrong with it (there are exceptions to this, especially for chinchillas socialized in open rooms) but that seems normal to me.

It sounds like your chinchilla is not comfortable in the open spaces and needs time to adjust. Not all chins like play times. If all he does is sit in the corner then maybe you should just spend time bonding so he feels more safe.

That's okay then. Thank you so much for replying. I'm not too worried. He does also jump and play a lot and he has started to be much more active. Thanks again :)
