Help with my chinchillas!?!???!??
« on: April 19, 2015, 09:54:05 AM »

Hi, thank you for taking the time to look at my post. I have recently adopted 2 3 year old female chinchillas. I am wondering how I can bond with them and make them like me better? I'm not saying they don't like me but having lived with the previous owner for 3 years they don't know who I am and I'm sure they're extremely scared. What can I do to get them to trust me? I know like interacting and talking with them everyday is basically what I can do but I'm just curious if anyone else had any tips? Thank you.

Hey, I always just put my hand in the cage and leave it on the floor away from them or touch their food so it makes a noise and they come down to have a nose at what's going on and usually climb on my hands and arm.. but I make no attempt at touching them or picking them up for a little while so they get used to me.. then build up to strokes.

After a couple of weeks after their relocation they will act more calm. Chins are not like cats and dogs. You have to go slow with them.

Go at their pace and not your pace. Like previously stated, it can take weeks and in your case if they don't know you the whole bonding process can take months.

Since there are two together don't expect them to bond with you as much as they do with each other.

Spend time with them...talk to them softly even if it seems weird.
Tell them about your day...sing them a song...be very gentle and don't make sudden movements.

Just take your time. They can take a few weeks to a couple months to fully settle in. Set up a schedule and stick to it. chins get used to set times for certain things and will eventually look forward to seeing you
