On a sad note, I just checked this person's blog, and the chin in the picture just passed away... oh dear... hope it wasn't due to obesity related health issues...

The biggest problem you'll run into first is lipidosis, or fatty liver disease. A diet that is high in fat (probably potato chips and greasy junk food) begins to cause fat deposits around and through the liver. Eventually the liver cannot function and the animal gets sick and dies. And who knows what else kinds of problems including malnutrition and the buildup of toxins in the system, and tooth decay/ malocclusion also occur. It is important to keep chinchillas on a strict diet if you want them to live their 10-15 year lifespan. Lipidosis is also a well known problem in pet birds and parrots although their diet is more complex.

I'm a programmer not a chinchilla breeder. I learn by asking questions just like you.
