Adding shelves
« on: July 12, 2014, 04:45:11 PM »

Hello everybody!!

I have a ferret nation cage, and I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on how to add wooden shelving in it for my chinchilla?
Anything that would be fun for them to jump on / climb etc..
Any and all suggestions would be great!
If you have pictures of your customized cages, feel free to add them, I am so not creative, but want to add something fun for my chins!

Thank you in advance!! :)

Here is my cage. There are others in the cage topic as well.

Shelving is just cutting a long white pine board, a 1" x 7" in my case, into shelves. Use 1/4" stud bolt, pre-drill the holes into the ends of the board first. Measure the distance inside of the cage where the shelf will be. Mark the holes where there are no obstructions for the washers. Then use fender washers that are large enough to overlap your bar spacing. Once the stud bolts are screwed in use wing nuts over the fender washers to secure the shelves. If you angle the shelves slightly downward toward the center of the cage the poop will fall onto the floor. In my case I didn't do that so I have to sweep the shelves every day. In my cage the shelves rest on horizontal cage bars and need no fasteners because of the way the cage is designed.
