Eye Problems
« on: December 16, 2012, 10:05:37 AM »

A vet visit is always a good idea to determine whether or not the eye has been scratched or damaged in any way.

Chinchillas often have minor eye irritations from dust or shavings. This will usually produce a
little white gunk in the corner of the eye and some minor watering of the eye.
Minor eye irritations can usually be cured with tea. Make a cup of warm tea following
the directions on the box. (Be sure its not hot enough to burn) Dip a cotton ball in the tea
and hold it over the eye for a few minutes. You should see an improvement by the next
morning.

Sometimes they will poke an eye with a piece of hay, an edge of something in the cage, or the finger of another chinchilla.
If the eye shows any sign of whiteness or if the chinchilla can't/won't open the eye see a vet right away.

If they gets worse within 24 hours see a vet.  Some problems need antibiotics or are signs of a bigger tooth problem.
